The history of Veličná encompasses sacred buildings as well as former market and administrative functions. Veličná was a market town as early as the 14th century. A document from 1370 mentions Orava as a county with its seat in Veličná. Market town and county seat describe different aspects of the town’s history: the first term describes the character of Veličná, while the second refers to Orava’s administrative role. This makes it possible to place the buildings in context both by period and by their former function.

Sacred Architecture

The Roman Catholic church was originally built in the Gothic style in the 14th century and is still surrounded by a defensive wall. In front of the church is a Calvary dating from 1777. The church preserves furnishings from the late 17th century, including a folk-style carved nativity scene. These dates refer to different elements: the 14th century marks the church’s origins, the late 17th century the surviving furnishings, and 1777 the Calvary in front of the building.

The Evangelical church was built in 1785 as a Toleration church. Its main altar features a painting of the Ascension of Christ by Peter Bohúň, dated 1864. The Evangelical rectory, built in 1788, bears a memorial plaque to Peter Bohúň. His name links the two buildings in different ways: as the artist of the altarpiece and as the person commemorated by the rectory.

Market and Secular Architecture

The Župný dom adds a secular perspective to the sacred buildings. The building, dating from the mid-17th century, still stands on the square. Markets were once held between the columns below the upper floor, while the town administration occupied rooms on the upper floor. Market activity and administration thus took place on two levels of the same building. The structure tells the story not only of when it was built, but also of its former public use.

The Baroque manor house was built in 1746 for the Orava estate. Its surviving features include a valuable portal, an arcade, stucco ceilings on the upper floor and an arcaded courtyard. The arcade and arcaded courtyard show the arcade motif in two architectural forms: one as a passageway, the other as a courtyard. The stucco ceilings add another feature, the decoration of the upper floor.

The Župný dom and manor house can also be distinguished by their secular roles: the Župný dom’s former uses centred on the market and town administration. The manor house, by contrast, is defined by its construction for the Orava estate and its Baroque architectural features. This allows you to compare two distinct historical focuses without attributing the same function to both buildings.

Historical Milestones

Chronologically, the story stretches from the market town and the 14th-century Catholic church through the Župný dom dating from the mid-17th century to the buildings and Calvary of the 18th century. The 1864 altarpiece provides a later reference point. The dates refer to different buildings, uses and furnishings—not to a single phase of construction.
