For a stay in Súlov, nature and cultural attractions can be considered as distinct focal points. The Súľovské skaly are known for their striking conglomerate formations and a described nature trail; the castle ruins, Hrádok, church and memorial room add various historical connections. This lets you decide whether nature, hiking or local history should take centre stage.

Rock Landscape of the Súľovské skaly

The Súľovské skaly National Nature Reserve covers 543.23 ha of protected area and 281.77 ha of buffer zone; it was designated in 1973. Weathering shaped the Súľov conglomerates into rock towers, pinnacles and gates. Near Súlov, the layers of Súľov conglomerate are more than 500 m thick. Both the striking rock formations and their geological structure are therefore part of the destination’s natural appeal.

Hiking to the Rock Gate and Castle Ruins

The nature trail runs through the most interesting central section of the protected area for visitors and leads to the Gothic Gate. The 13 m-high rock gate takes its name from its characteristic shape, which resembles a Gothic portal. The nature trail is 4.2 km long, with an ascent of 300 m and a descent of 300 m. Walking time is estimated at 1 hour and 40 minutes, not including breaks. As terrain conditions can also affect the duration, this is a guideline for walking time, not for the total time spent on the trail.

Súľovský hrad adds a medieval castle ruin at an altitude of 660 m to the hiking destinations. From the village of Súľov-Hradná, it can be reached on foot via red-marked hiking trails or the green-marked nature trail through the Súľov rocks. The first written mention dates from 1470. The elevation and date of mention provide two different points of reference: the structure’s location and its documented historical connection.

Historic Places and Heritage

Hrádok is situated on a steep hill above the old Minarovský mill, in front of the entrance to the Súľov Gorge. Its settlement is dated to the 9th to 11th centuries. Hrádok was later declared a national cultural monument in 1967 and a natural monument in 2001. These details distinguish the dated settlement from the two later heritage designations.

The Súľov-Hradná memorial room is located in the centre of Súľov. Its exhibition includes a historic living room, local folk costumes, work items, tools and old photographs, as well as early examples of technological progress. The various exhibits offer insights into both the history of domestic and working life and the development of the village.

The Church of St Michael the Archangel in Súľov is also a dated point of reference in the village’s history: it dates from 1616 and was remodelled in the 18th century. Finds from Šarkania diera Cave are another historical subject. They have been attributed to the Copper Age period of the Eneolithic, which spans 2900 to 1900 BC; the artefacts are kept in the Slovak National Museum. The church, memorial room and cave finds thus represent different types of historical evidence.

Súľov–Vrchteplá Cycling Route

The yellow-marked Súľov–Vrchteplá cycling route is another option. It is 4.5 km long, has 200 m of elevation difference and is classified as a leisure route. It is therefore 0.3 km longer than the 4.2 km hiking circuit; however, the elevation details differ: the nature trail lists the ascent and descent separately, while the cycling route gives an elevation difference. These figures help you compare the two routes based on their respective route details.
