Velke Rovne combines the tradition of wirecraft with historic churches and chapels. It also has an educational trail, a cycling route along the Kysucká cyklomagistrála, and a 300 m ski lift for winter. Culture, walking, cycling and a seasonal lift offer different options when planning your trip.

Wirecraft and Museum

The Múzeum Drotárie is a reconstruction of one of the oldest buildings in the centre of Velke Rovne. The municipality is considered the unofficial cradle of wirecraft, giving the museum a clear local connection. The museum also houses Slovakia’s largest nativity scene, made by L. Mikulík, who was born in Velke Rovne. On weekdays, the museum is open by appointment, so arrange your visit in advance.

Church and Chapel

The Church of Saint Michael was built on older foundations between 1753 and 1755. Its bell was made by bell founder J. Steistock in 1763; bas-reliefs depict Saint Anne and Saint Michael the Archangel. Opposite the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel stands the Neoclassical Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary, built in 1831. Their opposite positions provide a clear spatial reference, while their construction dates and the bell casting offer different historical points of reference. From the settlement of Ninise, a Stations of the Cross path leads to the Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Hájku. The Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose; check its condition on site if this is important to your visit.

Educational Trail, Cycling Route and Winter

The Veľké Rovné educational trail passes through the town centre and Rimanovice to the Osičie saddle. One route description gives its length as 4.1 km and its elevation gain as 320 m; it also includes optional sections. Route 1 of the Kysucká cyklomagistrála, by contrast, passes through Velke Rovne in the direction of Semeteš, Turzovka and Staškov. The educational trail and cycling route therefore offer different types of routes: the educational trail runs through the town centre and Rimanovice to the Osičie saddle, while the cycling route heads towards the three named places. In winter, a 300 m ski lift can be used in Velke Rovne. Before travelling, check whether it will be operating on your visit date.

Zarúbaná Kýčera Lookout Tower

The Zarúbaná Kýčera lookout tower is a three-storey wooden structure on the 884 m-high mountain of Zarúbaná Kýčera, in the cadastral area of Velke Rovne. A yellow-marked hiking trail leads to the tower from Ivor via Dolinky. It is currently inaccessible due to its dangerous condition; before travelling, check whether repairs have since changed access. Veľké Rovné–Ivor and the settlement of Dolinky are possible places to park when accessing the lookout tower. The nearest bus stop is Veľké Rovné–Ivor. Check the local availability of parking spaces.
