Mrčajevci: Kupusijada, Village Life and Cuisine
Accommodation in Mrčajevci
Mrčajevci is a rural village known since 2003 for its well-attended Kupusijada. This leaves two questions to consider when planning your trip: what defines the village’s character, and what role does regional food culture play?
Location and orientation
Mrčajevci lies on both sides of the Ibarska regional road, along the left edge of the West Morava Valley. Agriculture and livestock farming shape the village. The road is a concrete reference point for the settlement’s location, while the valley places it in its landscape. This helps you distinguish the area’s geographical setting from specific events such as Kupusijada.
Kupusijada and its cuisine
At Kupusijada, cabbage is cooked in an earthenware pot in several categories; the most successful contestants receive the Golden, Silver and Bronze Pot awards. The competition focuses on the cooking process, not just the finished dish. The programme for Kupusijada 2023 in Mrčajevci was set to include a competition to prepare Svadbarski kupus in an earthenware pot, with four categories: “The Whole Village Cooks,” “Teams and Individuals,” “Catering Establishments,” and “Svadbarski kupus Tasters.” The three pots are awards; the four names listed are categories in the planned 2023 programme.
Restaurant Erić in Mrčajevci serves Svadbarski kupus, Čačak proja, kačamak and kajmak. Svadbarski kupus is considered a speciality of the wider area: sauerkraut and meat are slow-cooked together in an earthenware pot. Kupusijada puts the preparation process at the centre of a competition, while the restaurant offers several named dishes.
The guest rooms and Ethno House “Erić” in Mrčajevci also offer restaurant specialities, including cabbage prepared according to a traditional recipe in an earthenware pot and dishes cooked under a sač. If you include this accommodation in your search, check availability and details directly.
Poetry Rock and the Timotijević Oak
The names of 56 award winners are engraved on Poetry Rock, at the highest point in Mrčajevci. This offers a different focus from Kupusijada: here, poetry takes centre stage; there, food culture does. The Timotijević Oak adds a natural landmark to the village’s profile. It stands on private land; its age is estimated at around 200 years and its height at approximately 21 metres.
Children’s and youth camps
Since 2009, Dečija Misija has organised children’s and youth camps in Mrčajevci during the summer holidays.
Camp Mrčajevci offers children and young people creative workshops, sports, team games, learning in nature and lectures. Physical activity and group games are combined with creative and educational activities. If a camp is the reason for your trip, check specific dates and participation requirements directly with the organiser.
