Somova: Water Landscapes and Wine Tastings
Accommodation in Somova
Somova is a destination for visitors who want to combine water landscapes, nature watching, and wine tastings. The commune in Tulcea County offers a range of ways to do so: wetlands and the Somova–Parcheș lake complex, activities on the water, and Crama Delta Dunării.
Landscape and Waters
About half of the administrative area of Somova commune, including the wetlands, lies within the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve. The natural Somova–Parcheș water complex in Tulcea County is also within the reserve. Local access rules may apply to protected areas. The Somova Forest, with its trails, is also nearby. There are therefore several points of interest for nature viewing: the wetlands within the commune, the natural Somova–Parcheș water complex, and the forest trails.
Getting Out on the Water
Visitors can explore the Somova–Parcheș lake complex by rowboat, kayak, or SUP board and take in the surrounding landscape, flora, and fauna. A kayak and SUP board rental center is located in Somova commune; check equipment availability before your trip. Verada Tour offers catamaran trips on Lake Somova in the early morning or at sunset. Check availability and booking conditions in advance. There are also leisure boat trips on the canals and lakes in the surrounding area. These offer views of the Delta landscape, wild birds, and fishermen’s huts; check which operators are currently running trips before you travel. Two distinctions may help you choose: the catamaran trips specify the time of day, while the leisure trips take place on the surrounding canals and lakes.
Wine Tastings in Somova
Crama Delta Dunării in Somova offers wine tastings, including in-depth tastings accompanied by platters of fish products and cheese. Tastings are available by appointment; confirm the current arrangements before your trip. The winery produces organic wine under the “La Sapata” logo. A visit to the winery provides a culinary activity in its own right, alongside the water-based activities.
Local History and Church Feast
Somova was first recorded under the same name on an Austrian map in 1790. The local feast of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel takes place on November 8. The map record and the feast offer different cultural points of interest: one relates to the history of the place name, the other to a local religious celebration. If you would like to include cultural connections like these in your plans alongside nature and water, they add another perspective to Somova’s landscape.
