Mahmudia lies on the left bank of the Sfântu-Gheorghe branch of the Danube. Nature, Roman ruins and local culture complement this geographical setting. When looking for hotels in Mahmudia, you can first consider whether birdwatching and waterways, history along the river branch, or customs and crafts are especially important for your trip.

Nature and waterways

The Danube Delta World Heritage Site is characterized by numerous lakes and wetlands. More than 300 bird species and 45 freshwater fish species live there. Lacul Rotund is one of the lakes around Lacul Gorgova and is rich in wildlife. Cormorants, pygmy cormorants, pelicans, herons and birds of prey can be found there, among other species. Lacul Cuzmintul Mare is a bird nesting area and is covered with water lilies. Thus, the nature theme encompasses not only different groups of birds, but also specific habitats and plant features of individual lakes.

A birdwatching trip into the Danube Delta is offered from Mahmudia.

River scenery and history

Peștera Tunel is a fossil cave on the right bank of the Sfântu-Gheorghe branch, near the landing stage. It has a single gallery, 19.20 meters long. Its fossil character and single gallery provide a geological accent alongside the lakes, which are characterized by their birdlife and plant life.

The ruins of the Roman fortress of Salsovia lie on a promontory on the Sfântu-Gheorghe branch. A birdwatching point is located nearby. Roman history and birdwatching are therefore close to one another. The promontory on the river branch marks the location of the ruins; the observation point provides another connection to nature in their surroundings.

Local culture and customs

Mahmudia's religious sites include three Old Believer Lipovan churches. They add a local religious connection to the Roman ruins. Mahmudia also observes winter customs from Christmas Eve on December 24 to Epiphany on January 6. These include Colindatul, Plugușorul, Semănatul, Sorcova, Capra and Ursul. The period spans Christmas and the turn of the year through the first week of January, offering a seasonal cultural connection.

The “Salsovia” amateur theatre festival is also among Mahmudia's cultural attractions. The Atelier de papură in Mahmudia is considered the only workshop in the Danube Delta where reed products with brand value are made. The products are characterized by original patterns and bold colors, including blue, which is also used in traditional Russian architecture. Theatre and crafts thus provide different accents from religious sites and winter customs.

Excursions and activities

Mountain bikes for adults and children are also available for hire in Mahmudia, allowing visitors to explore unpaved roads and trails in the surrounding area. This differs from the birdwatching trip: the bike rental focuses on roads and trails in the area, while the trip focuses on birdwatching in the Danube Delta. Check the seasonal availability of the trip and the availability of mountain bike rentals in advance.
