Beștepe can be explored through three themes: the landscape on the Danube Delta, early settlement history, and traditional customs. The Dealurile Beștepe hills and the wetlands along the Sfântu Gheorghe branch are particularly prominent. There is also navigation along the branch and a road connection from Tulcea. This lets you get to know the area through different interests—from nature and history to local traditions.

A landscape of hills and wetlands

The Dealurile Beștepe hills are a protected natural area and also a viewpoint. From there, the panorama extends across the waters and reed beds of the Danube Delta. The wetlands along the Sfântu Gheorghe branch are also part of the landscape: the area around the Dealurile Beștepe hills and the nearby wetlands are included in the “Beștepe-Mahmudia” Natura 2000 site. The hills and wetlands thus offer different views of the natural environment.

Near the fortress and the shore, a loess island with a preserved fragment of Pontic desert steppe is visible; grasses are part of the habitat described. While the panorama draws the eye across the water and reeds, the loess island is a specific fragment of steppe. Nature lovers will therefore find different landscape features in Beștepe, rather than just a single view of the delta.

Piatra lui Boboc and early history

Piatra lui Boboc is a fortified settlement dating from the 4th to 3rd century BC. It is attributed to the La Tène period and the Geto-Dacian culture. The archaeological site Situl arheologic de la Beștepe - Piatra lui Boboc (Be 101) is listed as a heritage site and lies about 1.2 kilometers northeast of Beștepe. Thus, in addition to its natural features, the area around the village also offers a tangible connection to pre-Christian settlement history.

It helps to keep the details distinct: Piatra lui Boboc refers to the fortified settlement and its chronological and cultural classification; the name Situl arheologic de la Beștepe - Piatra lui Boboc refers to the listed archaeological site. Its location is given as about 1.2 kilometers northeast of the village. This connects history with geographical orientation without equating the settlement’s dating with a present-day opportunity to visit.

Customs throughout the year

Traditional customs associated with birth, marriage, and death are preserved in Beștepe. There are also celebrations from the Orthodox calendar and certain agricultural festivals. The range of traditions thus combines important stages of life with religious and agricultural occasions. For travelers, learning about these local traditions adds another dimension to the landscape and archaeological history.

Winter customs include Colindatul, Pluguşorul, Semănatul, Sorcova, and Capra. The period specified for them runs from Christmas Eve on December 24 to Epiphany on January 6. The customs are therefore associated with a festive period lasting several weeks, rather than with just one holiday. If you are taking this period into account when planning your trip, check in advance what opportunities will be available during your visit.

Historically, on October 26, the village festival in Beștepe was celebrated in honor of the patron saint of the Sfântul Dumitru church. If you would like to plan your trip around this festival, check locally in advance to see whether it is currently being held again. The specific date and historical context are useful points of reference, but do not guarantee that an event is taking place today.

Getting there and the water connection

Beștepe can be reached from Tulcea by a county road; the road distance is around 25 kilometers. The Sfântu Gheorghe branch also provides a water connection from Beștepe into the interior of the Danube Delta. This should be distinguished from navigation on the Sf. Gheorghe branch, which is one of the attractions of Beștepe commune. If you are planning a trip by boat, check current options in advance. Road access, the geographical water connection, and boat travel thus address three different questions about getting oriented and planning.
