Letea is a village in the Danube Delta with a distinctive settlement history and a close connection to Letea Forest. It was the first village founded in the commune and dates back to 1709. Lipovan architecture is also part of the village’s character. As you plan your stay, you can consider nature, local history, and getting there as different aspects of the destination.

Getting to Letea and routes

Two routes are relevant for getting to Letea. A gravel road connects Letea to the city of Sulina via C.A. Rosetti. Periprava can be reached by water; from there, the land route to Letea passes through the commune of C.A. Rosetti along the local roads DC3–DC4. Check road conditions before setting out. Water levels and local transport conditions can change; take both into account when planning the route via Periprava. Letea is also connected to the Magearu Canal.

Letea Forest: dunes, protection, and plants

Letea Forest lies on the Letea sand ridge, on the edge of the traditional fishing village of the same name, and is surrounded by sand dunes. The Letea Forest Nature Park, designated a natural monument and under guard, is located near Letea. The forest has been protected since 1938; 2,825 hectares are part of strictly protected zones. As current access may differ from the historical protection rules, check the reserve’s current regulations before visiting.

Despite the non-Mediterranean climate, climbing plants such as the Greek liana Periploca graeca grow in Letea Forest. In spring, the forest is carpeted with lily of the valley (Convallaria majalis). Flowering times may vary from year to year, so spring is a useful seasonal guide but does not indicate a fixed blooming date.

Letea Forest is home to about 113 bird species, including 106 protected species. These figures are approximate and may depend on the current state of monitoring.

Wildlife watching

Groups of dozens or hundreds of feral horses roam the sand ridges around Letea. A sighting is not guaranteed; plan your visit in accordance with the reserve’s current regulations. This allows for the possibility of seeing wildlife without assuming it will be a fixed part of your stay.

Lipovan houses and architecture

Letea is one of the Danube Delta villages particularly associated with Lipovan houses. Traditional Lipovan houses, such as those found in Letea, were built from natural materials such as stone, adobe bricks, wood, and reeds. A common traditional design was a wagon-shaped house with three rooms and a veranda; the exteriors were painted white and blue, and sometimes green. Individual houses may have been altered or may be in varying states of preservation.

In Letea, the winter kitchen is considered a distinctive architectural feature. At the same time, it forms part of a broader community context. Along with the traditional houses, it offers another perspective on the village’s architecture, alongside its natural and settlement history.
