Sulina – Maritime Heritage, Danube Waterfront and Delta
Accommodation in Sulina
Sulina can only be reached by water via the Danube or the Black Sea. Tulcea is suggested as the port of departure. Since departure arrangements can change, check the current connection before travelling. Local visitor transport includes boat services, public transport, taxis and bicycle rentals along the waterfront. These conditions can help you plan your journey and get around during your stay.
Lighthouses and maritime history
There are four lighthouses in Sulina and its immediate surroundings. Separately, the Old Lighthouse was built by the Ottoman authorities in the early 19th century. The New Lighthouse stands at the seaward end of the right-hand Sulina jetty. Thus, the information about the lighthouses covers locations both in Sulina and in its immediate surroundings.
The CED Palace is located at the entrance to the waterfront promenade. The building was constructed in the Neoclassical style in 1866. It formerly housed the offices of the European Commission of the Danube, a shipping company and the harbour master's office. The palace therefore combines an architectural classification with the building's former institutional significance, without equating its past use with its present-day use.
Another historic building is the Delta Cathedral in Sulina. It is dedicated to Saint Alexander and Saint Nicholas, was donated by King Carol I and was completed in 1982. The information about the palace and the cathedral highlights different aspects: the CED Palace is noted for its Neoclassical style and former use as offices, while the cathedral is noted for its dedication and completion in the 20th century.
Waterfront, beach and unique nature
The approximately 5 km-long Danube promenade offers a rustic landscape. Along the waterfront, you can see urban ruins as well as passing boats and cargo ships. The Danube's mouth, known as Kilometer 0, is also nearby: it lies on the Sulina branch, directly opposite the town. Thus, views of the townscape and shipping traffic are the focus along the waterfront promenade, while Kilometer 0 is a distinct geographical reference point.
Sulina Beach is 2 km from the town. It is ecologically significant because the protected beach morning glory, which is listed on the Red List, grows there. If this is of interest to you, check the plant's current protection status before your visit, as conservation information can be updated.
A strictly protected area lies near Sulina, between the Sulina and Chilia branches. During boat trips on the channels and lakes of the Danube Delta, it can only be viewed from a distance. Check access restrictions before setting out. The maritime cemetery on the outskirts of Sulina includes a Christian, a Muslim and a Jewish cemetery; this composition, too, is part of the town's diverse history.
Activities on the water and by bicycle
A guided kayaking tour through the Danube Delta is offered from Sulina. One route passes the North Lighthouse and follows a channel into Musura Bay, where you can observe birds. Routes, availability and terms may change, so check these details before making plans. The kayaking tour can be considered a distinct option for a trip focused on the water, with birdwatching as part of the described route.
Cycling tours are also among the activities described: one route follows Channel 4 and the Sulina waterfront promenade. From Sulina, you can cycle to Letea and continue to Periprava. Between Letea and Periprava, you will have to push your bicycle for some sections. Trail conditions can vary; check the latest conditions before setting out. The two routes differ mainly in that one follows the channel and the waterfront promenade, while the route via Letea to Periprava includes a section where you have to push your bicycle.
