Topolog can be understood through three themes: the area's steppe and forest-steppe vegetation, archaeological sites from different periods, and the history of the Schitul Înălțarea Sfintei Cruci and Sf. Vasile.

Landscape and Nature in the Commune

The Topolog stream rises near the settlement in the Podișul Casimcei. Vegetation is also distributed differently across the region: steppe predominates in the south and southwest of the area, while forest-steppe predominates in the north and northeast. This means two landscape types coexist within the commune, distinguishable by their location relative to the compass directions.

The commune's administrative area overlaps with the protected landscape area ROSCI0201 Podișul Nord Dobrogean. Species of Community, national or nature-conservation interest recorded within the administrative area include the Greek tortoise (Testudo graeca). This information offers insight into the commune's landscape and nature-conservation context without implying that any particular sighting has taken place locally.

The Schitul and Its History

The Schitul Înălțarea Sfintei Cruci and Sf. Vasile is a local destination in Topolog, located in the Vraja forest area of the commune. Its church was built between 2001 and April 2002. The church's two iconostases were made by the priest Valcu Vasile. The construction period and craftsmanship offer a concrete glimpse into the Schitul's recent history.

A special account is also associated with 2001: the Schitul's Paraklis received wood from the trunk of an elm tree in which the shape of a clearly visible holy cross had been discovered. If you plan to visit the Schitul, check in advance whether a visit is possible.

Archaeological Sites and Their Locations

Several sites are located in relation to the Topolog valley and the Schitul Topolog. TOP 33 lies on the valley's left bank, very close to the Schitul. TOP 31 is southeast of it, also on the left bank. Both location descriptions refer to the left-hand side of the valley, but distinguish the sites by their respective positions relative to the Schitul.

Two Roman-period settlements differ in both classification and location. TOP 161, a Roman-period settlement, lies southwest of Topolog on a plateau near the Topolog stream valley. The Roman-period rural settlement TOP 26 is about 500 metres northwest of the Schitul Topolog, on the right bank of the valley. The approximate distance and the location on the right bank apply to TOP 26; they should not be attributed to TOP 161.

The prehistoric sites also have their own location references: the Neolithic settlement TOP 37 lies on a plateau at the northwestern edge of Topolog, near the wind farm. TOP 20 is a prehistoric settlement northeast of Topolog. The plateau on which it lies is bordered to the south and east by two small watercourses. Another named archaeological site, the Villa rustica de la Topolog – Stejarul lui Dobrică, lies outside the settlement on the north-northwestern side of Topolog.

Culture and Trip Planning

The BUJORELUL vocal ensemble from Topolog was founded in spring 2021 to preserve and promote traditional Romanian culture. Hramul dates are associated with the churches Sf. Constantin și Elena and Sf. Dumitru: 21 May for Sf. Constantin și Elena and 26 October for Sf. Dumitru.
