Maliuc on the Sulina Arm
Accommodation in Maliuc
Maliuc is located on the Sulina Arm and within the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve. Lakes in the surrounding area, the Taraschina archaeological site and local cultural events give the place several different facets. If you are looking for a hotel in Maliuc, you can choose your destination based on your travel interests: are you mainly interested in the landscape, early settlement or local cultural life?
Lakes and landscape around Maliuc
The Fortuna and Gorgova lakes are located around the municipality of Maliuc. Fortuna Lake covers 977.5 hectares and is one of the large lakes in the Danube Delta. Gorgova Lake is about 14 square kilometres in area and almost circular. The measurements can be compared: 14 square kilometres is equivalent to around 1,400 hectares, making it a larger area than Fortuna Lake’s 977.5 hectares. Since Gorgova’s area is only approximate, the comparison is rounded. The lake is also surrounded by eight neighbouring lakes. The area is not the only feature that defines Gorgova Lake; its nearly circular shape and proximity to other lakes also characterise the landscape.
Maliuc Dendrological Park adds a dated reference point to the landscape: it was established in 1969.
Taraschina: settlement and prehistoric landscape
The Neo-Eneolithic settlement of Taraschina is located in the outskirts of the municipality of Maliuc. It is considered the oldest human settlement known to date in the Danube Delta and has been declared a historic monument. Taraschina is also a submerged Chalcolithic tell settlement mound in Maliuc District. The mound provides evidence of prehistoric landscapes that are now flooded by the waters of the Danube. Taraschina thus connects the Delta’s settlement history with evidence of a prehistoric landscape that now lies beneath the waters of the Danube.
Local culture and events
Maliuc hosts the annual local cultural event “Serbările Scrumbiei.” An art exhibition and the “Maliuc” art camp are also held every year. In addition, local traditional ensembles perform in Maliuc and in the villages of the municipality. If you want to plan your trip around one of these annual events, check the exact date locally in advance.
Maliuc on the route towards Sulina
Maliuc is included as a transit point on the Danube–Black Sea route towards Sulina. Its location on the Sulina Arm and its role as a transit point on the route are two distinct reference points: the arm describes its geographical location, while the route identifies Maliuc as a transit point.
Choose the focus of your trip
When deciding whether to visit Maliuc, you can compare the lakes and their relative sizes with Taraschina and its archaeological significance. Local cultural events add the possibility of planning around a specific date. When looking for a hotel in Maliuc, it helps to first decide which of these facets will be the focus of your trip.
