Sarichioi on the Razim-Sinoe Lagoon Complex
Accommodation in Sarichioi
Sarichioi combines its location on the shore of the Razim-Sinoe Lagoon Complex with Lipovan architecture and local traditions. The destination can therefore be viewed through both its landscape and its local history: its connection to the water on the one hand, and its churches, historic homes and customs on the other. The old fishing harbour and Tulcea County’s official cultural and tourism Wine and Honey Route are also among its distinctive points of interest. Depending on whether you are first drawn to the landscape, architecture or cultural traditions, Sarichioi offers different perspectives on the place.
Landscape on the Razim-Sinoe Lagoon Complex
Sarichioi lies on the shore of the Razim-Sinoe Lagoon Complex. Lake Razim is located within Sarichioi commune and is considered Romania’s largest lake. This distinction refers to the lake, not to the entire lagoon complex. The difference is useful for geographical orientation: Sarichioi is situated by virtue of its location on the complex, while the superlative applies to Lake Razim. This keeps the town’s relationship to the shore distinct from the lake’s classification as two separate aspects of the landscape.
Lipovan architecture
Sarichioi’s historic area has Lipovan homes that are more than a century old. One specific example of its architecture is the Old Rite Orthodox Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God (“Nașterea Maicii Domnului”): built in 1866, it has a cross-shaped plan inspired by Byzantine architecture. Its three entrances serve different purposes. The main entrance is intended for women; the two side entrances in the naos are reserved exclusively for men. The homes represent the historic residential area, while the church’s construction date, floor plan and arrangement of entrances are specific architectural features. Two Lipovan churches in Sarichioi are also considered visitor attractions.
Traditions and shared heritage
In Sarichioi, Maslenița, also known as Săptămâna Brânzei or Lăsata Secului, includes dancing and cheerful singing in the streets, social gatherings and traditional dairy dishes such as vareniki, blinî and piroghi. Music, getting together and food are all part of the celebration, reflecting the communal side of the tradition. This offers a different perspective from the churches and homes that shape the town’s architectural heritage.
The Lipovan community founded the folk ensemble “Landâş” (“Lăcrămioara”) to revive and preserve local traditions. Alongside communal customs, the revival and preservation of local traditions are therefore another distinct focus. Maslenița showcases dancing, songs, gatherings and food; the ensemble adds another dimension by nurturing local traditions.
Wine and Honey Route and old fishing harbour
Sarichioi is included as a transit point on Tulcea County’s official cultural and tourism Wine and Honey Route. Wine and honey provide the route’s theme, while Sarichioi’s role in it is that of a transit point. This establishes a regional connection distinct from the town’s architectural and traditional themes. The old fishing harbour, by contrast, is a specific point of interest in Sarichioi, where visitors can experience the local atmosphere. The route and harbour thus offer two different perspectives on the place: one within the context of Tulcea County and the other right at the old harbour.
