Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture in the city center, an open-air museum featuring rural building styles, and a mountain lake at an altitude of 2,034 meters: Sibiu and Sibiu County offer very different experiences. When planning your trip, it is worth first deciding whether to focus on urban history, green spaces and leisure activities, or mountain and hiking routes.

Architecture and Art in Sibiu

Sibiu’s historic center features Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture. Its landmarks include St. Mary’s Parish Church, the Altenberger House and Brukenthal Palace. The range of architectural periods provides a common thread for a city visit without reducing the experience to a single style.

Brukenthal Palace opened to the public as an art museum in 1817. The Brukenthal Museum includes galleries of European, Romanian and contemporary art, with paintings, sculptures, prints and maps. The Muzeul ASTRA open-air museum offers another perspective on culture: its exhibition areas include peasant homesteads, workshops, wooden churches, roadside crosses, sheepfolds, and water and windmills. Urban architecture and rural building and working traditions thus stand side by side as distinct themes.

Green Spaces, Animals and Leisure Activities

Sub Arini Park covers 22 hectares and is home to 70 tree species and around 100 bird species. These biological species counts may change. At 960 hectares, Dumbrava Natural Park is considerably larger than Sub Arini Park. Sibiu Zoo offers a different perspective on nature: it is home to more than 250 animals from over 50 species; these population figures may also change.

The Lacul lui Binder recreation area offers wakeboarding, water skiing, stand-up paddleboarding, canoeing, beach volleyball, swimming and sport fishing. Activities and facilities may change, so check what is currently available before visiting. The options here range from water sports to beach and fishing activities, complementing the parks’ quieter natural attractions with specific leisure opportunities.

Mountain Landscapes and Trails

Păltiniş is located at an altitude of 1,442 meters in the Cindrel Mountains. Coniferous forests, mountain ridges and extensive pastures characterize the surroundings. Another notable high-altitude destination is Bâlea Lake: the Transfăgărăşan Alpine Road, DN 7C, leads to the lake at an altitude of 2,034 meters and is used by motorists, cyclists and motorcyclists. Check seasonal access conditions separately before planning your route.

Sibiu County has more than 500 marked hiking trails. A hiking trail in the Bâlea region offers numerous viewpoints with panoramic views of the Bâlea Caldera, Bâlea Edge, Paltinu Summit and Our Lady’s Valley.

Longer and themed routes also offer different perspectives on the region. The Via Transilvanica crosses 100 kilometers of northern Sibiu County and offers cultural experiences. The Hârtibaciu Valley Greenway starts in Sibiu and passes through Daia, Roşia, Vurpăr, Hosman, Fofeldea, Nocrich, Alţâna and Agnita. Route conditions and services may change; check the details before setting out on a specific tour.

The Drumul brânzei (Cheese Route) in Mărginimea Sibiului passes through Boiţa, Tălmăcel, Sadu, Râu Sadului, Păltiniş, Răşinari, Gura Râului, Sibiu, Orlat, Fântânele, Sibiel, Sălişte, Tilişca, Jina and the Transalpina. Access conditions at individual stops may vary; check the details when planning your route.
