Veştem: Churches, Schitul and Routes
Accommodation in Veştem
Veştem lies at an altitude of 448 m in the commune of Șelimbăr. The commune is located in the centre of the Sibiu Depression, along the middle course of the Cibin River. The DN1 passes through Veştem and runs west from there towards Avrig, Făgăraș and Brașov. This gives you two ways to get your bearings: the village’s location within the commune and its position along the DN1. If you are looking for a hotel in Veştem, you can also weigh up whether you are mainly interested in historic buildings, the routes mentioned here or the surrounding bodies of water when choosing your destination.
Church and Monastic History
The Biserica „Cuvincioasa Paraschiva” was built in 1842 and painted in the same year; further painting work followed in 1852. An entry from 1683 also records the sending of a Gospel to the church in Veştem. This brings together a 19th-century chronology of construction and painting, and an earlier account of a religious book being sent there.
Schitul Veştem has its own founding marker: its foundation stone was laid in 2007 on land donated by several families from Veştem. The complex, as described in 2023, includes a church, a cell block, an outdoor altar and other ancillary buildings. The church „Înălţarea Domnului” at Schitul Veştem was consecrated during a service attended by pilgrims from nearby villages and other parts of Romania. In contrast, the construction and painting work are the focus for Biserica „Cuvincioasa Paraschiva”; for Schitul, the focus is on its founding, the components of the complex and the consecration service.
Routes and Bodies of Water
A longer route runs from Sibiu via Guşteriţa, Dealul lui Tablă, Capul Dealului, Valea Daia, Daia, Caşolţ, Dealul Bradului and La Trei Morminte to Veştem, then continues to Mohu and Bungard before returning to Sibiu via DJ106 and Guşteriţa. Along this sequence, Veştem lies between La Trei Morminte and Mohu. The route thus places the village within a longer series of named stops.
Another route leads to the Veştem pasture, descends along a sandy path and then follows the river to Mohu and on to Bungard. While the longer route is described mainly by its sequence of place names, this one gives details about the route and the terrain. The description was updated in April 2026. As surface conditions may change, it is a good idea to check route conditions before setting out.
Lacul Taberei lies between Veştem and Mohu and is associated with Mihai Viteazu’s historic camp. Fishing Lakes 1 and 2 near Tocile/Veştem are facilities for recreational and sport fishing. These bodies of water can therefore be distinguished by their respective associations: Lacul Taberei is linked primarily to the historic camp, while the fishing lakes are designated for recreational and sport fishing.
