Rusciori can be understood through three distinct points of reference: the valley running through the village center, the Evangelical church and the Roman settlement west of the village. These places represent different spatial and historical layers. The “Drumul Sării – Țara Secașelor” cycling route also connects Rusciori to a trail through several named places. If you are planning your trip around cultural heritage, local history or cycling, these give you specific themes to guide your choices.

The Valley and Roman Settlement

The Rusciorului Valley, also called Valea Săpunului, runs through the center of Rusciori. Both names refer to the same valley. The Roman settlement, by contrast, lies two kilometers west of the village, on a plateau on the slope of the Secașelor. This distinction is helpful for getting your bearings: the valley runs through the middle of Rusciori, while the settlement occupies a separate location west of the village. This lets you consider the landscape and archaeological history as two distinct ways of describing the area.

The Evangelical Church and Its Historic Furnishings

The Evangelical church of Rusciori is dated to the 13th to 16th centuries and is listed as a historic monument. This broad dating should be distinguished from the dates of individual furnishings. A 2009 travel report mentions an altar from 1734 and one of the three bells, which dates from 1742. These dates refer to the altar and bell, not to the dating of the church building as a whole. When exploring the cultural heritage, you will therefore find several distinct points of reference in time: the dating of the church and the specific dates of its furnishings.

From Roman Times to the Village’s History

The Roman settlement is dated to the 2nd to 3rd centuries AD. It therefore points to a time long before Rusciori’s first recorded mention, around 1380, under the name vila Rutenica. In 1494, the village was completely burned down during a Turkish invasion. These dates relate to different parts of the history: the dating refers to the settlement, the mention to the village’s name, and 1494 to an event that affected Rusciori. This allows you to distinguish the different periods without conflating the settlement site, the history of the name and the historical turning point.

Rusciori on the Cycling Route

The “Drumul Sării – Țara Secașelor” cycling route passes through the village along the Sibiu – Ocna Sibiului – Topârcea – Ludoș – Apoldu de Jos – Amnaș – Mag – Rusciori – Sibiu route. The route can also be ridden in the opposite direction. For your planning, both Rusciori’s place on the stated route and the option of traveling in the opposite direction are relevant; no specific direction is prescribed.

An operator announcement about the launch of the metropolitan network envisaged the 530 line from December 1, 2025, connecting Rusciori with Marquardt via DJ143B and E81. The 24 line was then supposed to continue to Andrei Șaguna Street. This information describes the plan at the time. Check the current timetable before making a specific journey.
