Chirpar: Fortified Churches and Village History
Accommodation in Chirpar
In Chirpăr, the construction phases of the fortified Evangelical church span from the 13th century to the 19th century. Churches and historical traces in Veseud, Vărd, and Săsăuș also tell of different periods of construction. The commune of Chirpar lies in a hilly area crossed by the valleys of Valea Veseudului and Valea Ilimbav. Its cultural history and rural landscape thus offer two distinct perspectives on the journey.
Churches and Fortifications from Different Centuries
The complex of the fortified Evangelical church in Chirpăr is a historic monument complex dating from the 13th to the 19th century. The church has construction phases from the 13th century, around 1500, and from 1800 to 1850. Fragments of the fortified enclosure and the zwinger date from the 16th century. The complex, construction phases, and remains of the fortifications provide different time frames: the overall complex spans a broad period, while individual parts can be dated more precisely.
In Veseud, the complex of the fortified Evangelical church dates from the 13th to the 18th century. The church has construction phases from the 13th and 16th centuries, as well as from 1784 to 1785. A fragment of the fortified enclosure with a gate tower dating from the 16th to the 18th century has been preserved. There is also the “Sf. Gheorghe” church, built in 1790. The two complexes therefore differ in their recorded time spans: in Chirpăr, the range extends to the 19th century, while in Veseud it extends to the 18th century.
Other churches add their own construction histories to the overview. The “Înălțarea Domnului” church in Chirpăr was built in 1844 and remodeled in 1899. The Evangelical church in Vărd dates from the 13th century; its tower dates from the 14th century, while its choir and vault date from 1853. In Săsăuș, the Orthodox “Adormirea Maicii Domnului” church is a historic monument dating from around 1782. The comparison shows why it is worth looking not only at the age of a church building but also at the dates of its individual parts: the tower, choir, vault, and later remodeling each have their own date.
Local History and Craftsmanship
Residents of Chirpăr and Veseud built a refuge fortress on the boundary between their two villages. The history of these places therefore also includes a historical connection that goes beyond their churches. Chirpăr was also home to an important pottery center, which stopped production in the mid-19th century. This part of the local history draws attention to craftsmanship and production alongside religious architecture.
Hilly Landscape and Route
The Hârtibaciu de Sud Est protected area lies partly within the commune of Chirpăr. Rural tourism and agrotourism are listed among the tourist offerings in Chirpăr. One version of the “The greenway of Hârtibaciu Valley” route passes through Săsăuș and Chirpăr. The valleys of Valea Veseudului and Valea Ilimbav describe the commune’s hilly landscape; the route passes through the named villages. Thus, landscape features and the route’s course provide distinct points of reference.
