Bascov: Wooden Church, Culture and Landscape
Accommodation in Bascov
During a stay in Bascov, natural surroundings and cultural history sit side by side. You can get your bearings in this destination by looking at its designated protected area, historic wooden church and the roads that run through the commune. When searching for a hotel in Bascov, you can first consider whether cultural heritage, the landscape or finding your way around the area matters most for your trip.
Landscape between the Argeș and Cotmeana
The 162-hectare Lacul Bascov bird protection area extends across the localities of Bascov and Budeasa. It includes the surface of the Bascov reservoir on the Argeș River. The commune’s local water network also includes the Argeș River, the Bascov stream, and the Bascov and Budeasa reservoirs. The protected area and the other bodies of water offer distinct points of reference for understanding the commune’s landscape.
The wider landscape also includes part of the Argeș floodplain and the Cotmeana Platform. This relatively flat transitional landscape lies between the Subcarpathian hills and the plain. This makes it possible to distinguish the clearly defined protected area from the commune’s broader landscape setting: Lacul Bascov refers to a specific protected area, while the floodplain and platform describe the wider natural environment.
Wooden church and ecclesiastical heritage
A specific point of reference for local history is the wooden church dedicated to “Sf. Gheorghe” (St George). It is a historic monument built in the mid-18th century. It was founded by Martin Buliga, a merchant from Pitești. The six carved window frames have different decorative motifs, including a cross, diamond, ivy leaf, rosette, “Alveole” and the tree of life. The frames are therefore not all decorated alike; their motifs range from geometric shapes to plant and figurative designs.
To find your way around the town centre, it may help to know that the church is approximately 300 metres from the Bascov commune’s civic centre. If you would like to see the church interior, check in advance whether and when a visit is possible. Wooden ecclesiastical heritage also features in a broader cultural context: the Wooden Churches Route in Argeș County lists wooden ecclesiastical monuments in the territory of Bascov commune and in the village of Glâmbocu.
Culture and municipal recreation areas
Bascov Cultural Centre runs programmes and projects in culture, information and lifelong learning. These topics add an institutional cultural perspective to the picture of the commune. At a cultural event on the theme of the Ia in Bascov in 2026, the exhibition “ZIUA IEI. Expoziție de Port Popular” was part of the programme. The Doina Bascovului ensemble gave the audience singing and dance performances.
Municipal recreation areas are also part of the local landscape. The Brăileni picnic and recreation area was developed by the commune as part of a participatory budgeting project. Another use is documented for the Islaz picnic and recreation area, with a specific date: on 15 May 2026, it became a venue in Aninoasa, in the village of Brăileni, Bascov, for entertainment, physical activities and artistic performances. These are two distinct locations.
Road connections for your journey
The paved DN7-E51 road runs for about 7.5 kilometres through the territory of Bascov commune. It connects the commune with Pitești and the commune centre with the western villages of Glâmboc, Valea Ursului, Brăileni, Mica and Prislopul Mic. In the commune centre, the DJ703 road branches off from DN7-E15 towards Pitești–Curtea de Argeș. For specific journeys, it is worth checking current traffic conditions.
This should help you work out which part of Bascov is most important for your trip.
