If you’re looking for hotels in Călinești, the area’s history offers a concrete starting point for planning your trip: its monasteries, wooden churches, historical building phases and an archaeological settlement take center stage. These subjects differ in both period and content. You can decide whether you’re particularly interested in monastery history, church architecture or archaeological traces of earlier settlement.

Râncăciov Monastery and its historical landmarks

Râncăciov Monastery lies 7 km north of the old Pitești–Bucharest road and east of the village of Râncăciov, in the commune of Călinești. The old road and the village are two separate landmarks for orientation. The monastery’s first documented mention as a monastic institution is dated July 19, 1498. This date marks its first mention, not its founding date.

A later landmark is the endowment of a new church at the monastery by Arsenie Şoimul and his wife Ana. It took place between June 10, 1647, and September 27, 1648. This allows the first documented mention of the monastic institution to be distinguished chronologically from the later endowment of a new church. This distinction is especially useful when exploring the monastery’s history: an early written record and a later church building tell of different periods.

Wooden churches and construction methods

An October 2020 landscape description places the church Biserica „Cuvioasa Paraschiva” of the former Schit Lacu Negru among hills, on the edge of the large and small lakes. According to the description, the two lakes meet directly in front of the church. The building history also offers a concrete insight into the site: the brick church was built in 1787 by Neagu and Paraschiva, following an earlier wooden construction phase. The transition from a wooden structure to a brick church is a distinct architectural landmark in the recorded history of the former hermitage.

Călinești is also home to the wooden church „Sf. Apostoli Petru şi Pavel”. Its oak beams are joined using the so-called dovetail system, and the church also has a masonry base. The construction described here can be identified in concrete terms: the dovetail system refers to the way the oak beams are joined, while the masonry base is another building feature.

Another wooden church is located in Cârstieni. It is dedicated to „Sf. Apostol Toma” and „Sf. Voievozi”, is also known as „a Turcului”, and dates from 1758–1759. The same church is listed as stop 5 on the wooden churches tourist route. Its two dedications, common name and place on a themed route are all aspects of this building.

Archaeological traces and the history of Gorgani

The Râncăciov – Dealul Olarului archaeological site is classified as a settlement with several chronological phases. These include the Eneolithic, the Bronze Age, the Hallstatt period, the La Tène period and the Middle Ages, including the 14th century. This sequence of dates thus spans a range of eras. It offers a different way of exploring the past than the churches’ building history: here the focus is on settlement phases, while there it is on architectural forms, dedications and endowments.

Gorgani Monastery also has a recorded building history. Its old church was moved in 1988 from the cemetery of the village of Drăghicești to a nearby hill and restored. The monastery church known as „Biserica Doamnii Bălașii” is estimated to date from 1720 to 1740. This date is an estimate; the founding inscription is missing. Together, these examples show different ways of engaging with Călinești’s cultural heritage: through a documented relocation, an approximate date, the construction method of a wooden church or a long sequence of archaeological settlement phases.

Cultural history as a guide for your trip

To make your choice, you can start with the subject that interests you most. The history of Râncăciov Monastery offers clearly dated historical landmarks; the churches of Călinești and Cârstieni bring specific construction methods, dedications and names into focus. The Dealul Olarului site, in turn, represents several archaeological periods. If you’re looking for hotels in Călinești based on these interests, you’ll have a concrete cultural focus to guide your travel plans.
