Pietroșani: Churches, Valleys and History
Accommodation in Pietroșani
Pietroșani brings together historic churches, an archaeological site and landscapes shaped by rivers, valleys and hills. For trip planning, it helps to consider these themes separately: the churches span building periods from the 18th and 19th centuries to the first known church, dating to 1516; the DJ731 places the commune within a road network. If you are looking for a hotel in Pietroșani, you can focus on culture, landscape or passing through the area.
Historic Churches and Places of Remembrance
In Retevoiești is Cula Drugănescu, which is listed as a historic monument. The wooden church “Naşterea Maicii Domnului” in Gănești is also listed as a monument; it dates from the mid-19th century. Its details include a rope-shaped, relief-carved central band, a memorial corner for those who fell in the First and Second World Wars, and a tombstone in the entrance porch. The church “Sf. Nicolae”, “Cuvioasa Paraschiva” and “Sf. Filofteia” in Bădești is listed as a historic monument dating from 1896 to 1902.
Two points in the history of Retevoiești’s churches should be distinguished: the village’s first known church was built in 1516 during the rule of the holy prince Neagoe Basarab. The present-day church “Sfânta Treime,” by contrast, was built in 1795–1796. Thus, the early building history and the present-day church stand as separate stops.
The “Siliște” archaeological site lies between Retevoiești and Vărzăroaia on the right bank of the Râul Doamnei. A medieval settlement, the courtyards of boyars and a church have been preserved there. Another memorial in Pietroșani is the “Monument al eroilor căzuți în Primul Război Mondial”: the rectangular marble plaque bears a dedication and the names of 30 heroes who fell in the First World War.
Wooden Church Route and Road Connections
Pietroșani is a transit commune on the wooden church route of Argeș County. The DJ731, which passes through the area, is a separate matter: to the north, it connects Pietroșani with Domnești, Corbi and Nucșoara. To the south, it leads to Coșești and Dărmănești, where it ends at the DN73. The route links to the county’s wooden churches, while the county road specifies the connections to the north and south.
Valleys and Hills
In the commune’s territory, the valley of the Râul Doamnei widens between the hills Voineagul, Sălbișul, Muschiosul, Goila and Dadele. On a more local scale, Valea Rudii lies on the site of the old village settlement. It begins at Piscul Doamnei, where it meets Valea Bădeștilor and Valea Iudei. These are two distinct landscape features: the river valley between named hills, and a single valley associated with the old settlement.
Alex & Ema Land
The Alex & Ema Land amusement park was established on October 10, 2012. The historical-themed workshops offered there included “Legendele Olimpului,” “Misterele Egiptului Antic,” “Legenda lui Minos și Labirintul Minotaurului,” “Vlad Țepes și Turcii” and “Camelotul și Cavalerii Mesei Rotunde.” Traditional workshops in weaving and textile work, wood carving, pottery and decorating Easter eggs were also offered. The two groups combined stories from mythology and history with craft techniques.
