If you’re looking for hotels in Podu Dâmboviței, it’s worth considering the specific attractions associated with the area: the rock faces at the entrance to Cheile Dâmbovicioarei, various routes, and a fortress, a historic bridge, and a church. These offer different starting points for planning your trip. You can first decide whether you want your stay to focus on the landscape, a particular way of getting around, or historic sites.

Landscape at Cheile Dâmbovicioarei

On the way from Podu Dâmboviței to Dâmbovicioara, the first rock faces appear at the entrance to Cheile Dâmbovicioarei after about a fifteen-minute walk. The gorge consists of two sections: Cheia Mare and the shorter Cheia Mică a Dâmbovicioarei. The time estimate describes reaching the first rock faces along the route between the two places; the two names distinguish the sections of the gorge. This makes it possible to consider the distance and the layout of the Cheile separately when planning.

Choose routes by mode of travel

Piatra Craiului National Park lists an easy mountain-bike route from Dâmbovicioara via Podu Dâmboviței and Sătic to Cabana Garofița Pietrei Craiului. The route, intermediate places, and destination are specified, and the route is also rated as easy. Another option is hiking trail PA, which connects Podu Dâmboviței with the village of Fundățica and follows the Valea Cheii.

The two routes differ specifically in their mode of travel and destinations. If you’re looking for a cycling route, another one starts in Podu Dâmboviței. To decide, you can first consider whether you’d prefer a mountain-bike route following the stated sequence of places or a hiking trail to Fundățica. The routes represent different ways of exploring the area; their respective courses should be considered separately.

Fortress, bridge, and church

Oratia Fortress, also known as Oratea, is located on Dealul Sasului near Podu Dâmboviței, about 1.5 kilometers north of the village. It is a medieval fortress dating from the 14th century. In the village itself is the historic Podul lui Brâncoveanu bridge, which dates from 1711. The historic Sf. Împăraţi Church is also in Podu Dâmboviței; it dates from 1940.

The three sites can therefore be readily distinguished by period: the fortress represents the Middle Ages, while the bridge and church date from considerably later. Their locations also help with orientation: the fortress is identified as being north of the village on Dealul Sasului; the bridge and church are associated with Podu Dâmboviței. If you’re interested in the history of the area, the different dates offer a concrete way to place these buildings in context.

Road sequence to Peștera Dâmbovicioara

To reach Peștera Dâmbovicioara, turn onto DJ730 immediately after crossing the bridge over the Râul Dâmbovița. Follow this road for 4 kilometers, then continue on DC22 for another 1 kilometer. Check local road conditions before setting out.

Find the right focus for your stay

The rock faces at the entrance to the Cheile and the two sections of the gorge provide a point of interest in the landscape. The routes include an easy mountain-bike trail and a hiking trail, each with a different course and destination. The fortress, bridge, and church add clearly dated examples to the history of the area.
