Arefu: Local History, Monuments and Mountain Trails
Accommodation in Arefu
Arefu combines a long local history with churches and monuments, as well as nature and outdoor activities. The village lies on the right bank of the Argeș, which flows through it. There are several interests to consider when planning your trip: the history of the village and its commune, water sports and boat trips on Lake Vidraru, or hiking trails to the high peaks of the Făgăraș Mountains. You can decide whether cultural history, water or mountain hiking will be the focus of your trip.
History and Monuments in Arefu
Arefu has a history stretching back more than 600 years. The village is documented in a charter dating from 1558, issued by the voivode Mircea Ciobanul. The local past also includes Arefu’s history as a village of free peasants. Their ancestors passed down property rights to 16 surrounding mountains, which the rulers of Wallachia recognized directly. This tradition gives local history a distinctive focus alongside the commune’s better-known buildings.
In Arefu village, the Heroes’ Monument stands in the courtyard of the Cuvioasa Parascheva Church. Erected in 1935, it commemorates those who fell in the War of Independence and the First World War. The church itself dates from 1860. In Căpățânenii Ungureni, a village in Arefu commune, you will find Casa Gheorghe Stephănescu. Built in 1873, the house is listed as a historic monument.
Poenari Fortress is also located within Arefu commune, on a steep rocky peak at the entrance to the Argeș Gorge. It was rebuilt and fortified in the late 14th and early 15th centuries, first by Vlad Dracul and then by his son Vlad Țepeș. Arefu village is also home to the Casa Rozeanu village museum, a traditional house from the Argeș region that opened as a museum in 2016.
Scenery and Activities
Castelul Dracula Transfăgărășan is located in Căpățânenii Ungureni, at the foot of Poenari Fortress. This museum-castle is dedicated to the Dracula legend and offers historical exhibitions, guided tours, and an educational program about the legend and the medieval history of Wallachia. If you plan to take a guided tour, check availability in advance.
Water sports and boat trips to the Cumpăna mountain cabin are available on Lake Vidraru. Hiking trails to the high peaks of the Făgăraș Mountains begin north of the lake, including routes to Moldoveanu at 2,544 metres and Negoiu at 2,535 metres. This gives you a choice between two different types of activity: options on the water and trails leading toward high peaks.
Another named hiking route is the Valea lui Stan Gorge Trail. It starts on the Transfăgărășan and is marked and equipped by Salvamont Argeș. Via Valahia offers a different focus: this cultural tourism route was created in 2020 by the Asociația Montană Vidraru and highlights history and cultural landmarks. After crossing the Transfăgărășan, it continues along Valea Larga and reaches Arefu.
The commune’s natural landmarks add to the range of themes to explore. Within the commune, Pădurea Arefu forest is designated as a forest reserve. Three caves near Piscul Negru are classified as natural monuments. Forests and caves therefore sit alongside historic buildings and activities on the lake or mountain trails.
Planning Your Trip
For orientation, Arefu lies on the right bank of the Argeș, and the river flows through the village. The commune is accessible via the DC 249 Căpățâneni–Arefu road, as well as other commune and forest roads. Poenari Fortress, Casa Gheorghe Stephănescu and the museum-castle are all within the commune, but in different settlements or landscape settings. When looking for a hotel, you can choose the focus of your trip without combining every cultural, nature and outdoor activity into a single itinerary.
