Engavågen: Trails, views and local dining
Accommodation in Engavågen
In Engavågen, you can choose from a variety of trails, viewpoints and local places to eat. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay, the specific walking and hiking options may help determine your choice of destination. The trails differ, among other things, in their starting points and the character of the route described.
Hiking trails and starting points
The hike to Stordalstinden starts at Samfunnshuset Idun, where parking is available. The trail to Sivertbu can also start there. Along the hiking trail in Engavågen are the sheltered tables Lavvoll and Bråten. Nordtunhytta is a shelter on the trail between the school and the kindergarten. Sivertbu itself is a barbecue hut on Lushågen, built by Idun Bygdelag in spring 2009.
The walking trail to Verdens ende
This walking trail starts at Vallvågen boat harbour in Engavågen. From there, a paved path leads to the headland outside Nordtun HelseRehab. The path is designed for people with disabilities. A permanent photo exhibition featuring nature and wildlife images is installed along the route. Its starting point, paved path and exhibition give this walk a distinctive character among the options described in Engavågen.
Views of the coast and mountains
From Koppen, you have a good view of Meløy’s skerry coast. Closer to Engavågen, the hike to Stordalstinden offers a different view: of the Helgeland coast, Svartisen and Helgelandsbukken; on clear days, the Lofotveggen is also visible. This gives you a choice between a viewpoint overlooking the skerry coast and a hike with several named distant landmarks, each offering a different perspective on the landscape.
Bondestua in the centre
Bondestua is a café and pub in the centre of Engavågen, with 70 seats indoors and outdoors. It serves traditional Norwegian home cooking, sometimes with its own twist. Bondestua also offers catering for large and small private or business events. If you plan to eat there, check the current opening hours and menu in advance; if you’re interested in catering, it’s best to enquire directly.
Meløy as the wider region
The wider destination of Meløy is characterised by a skerry landscape made up of an archipelago of more than 755 large and small islands. Svartisen is also part of this region: it is Norway’s second-largest glacier and the lowest-lying glacier on the European mainland. Engabreen, also known as Engenbreen, is a glacier tongue of Svartisen that extends towards Holandsfjord in Meløy. The route to Engabreen begins with a boat trip across Holandsfjord to the landing stage at Engen. The boat service is seasonal; check the timetable before your trip. Guided glacier hikes offering views of the blue ice are available at Engabreen.
