For your trip to Åmnes, the hike up Åmnesfjellet offers a specific point of interest to help with your planning. The route leads from Kjørhaug along an old path to Kjørhaugvatnet, then continues over the ridge. If you are looking for a hotel in Åmnes, you can make this hike a local focus and include excursions elsewhere in Meløy in your travel plans.

Hiking up Åmnesfjellet

The route links the old path, Kjørhaugvatnet, and the subsequent climb over the ridge. You can continue the hike to the mountain’s highest point, which is at 600 metres. There is a collection box on the route at 530 metres, slightly below the highest point. The difference between these two elevations is 70 metres: the collection box and the summit therefore mark different points on the hike.

The path to Åmnesfjellet is well marked. Parking is available at Åmnes Camping. Local trail conditions may vary; markers and parking arrangements may change. Check this information before setting out.

Engenbreen as an excursion destination

A day trip takes you to Engenbreen, a glacier tongue of Svartisen. The journey covers 40 kilometres by car and takes about ten minutes by boat. Engabreen, also known as Engenbreen, extends towards the Holandsfjord in Meløy. The route to Engabreen begins with a boat trip across the Holandsfjord to the landing point at Engen. Boat services are seasonal; check departure times and access arrangements again before setting off. Guided glacier hikes offering views of the blue ice are available at Engabreen.

Meløy for planning the rest of your trip

The municipality of Meløy is surrounded by an archipelago of more than 755 large and small islands. A network of ferries, express boats, and buses connects the island communities and other places in the municipality; routes and timetables may change. Svartisen is Norway’s second-largest glacier and also the lowest-lying glacier on the European mainland. The walk to the ice takes about an hour, follows easy terrain, and is suitable for families with children. Conditions may vary by season. Meløy also offers good access to hikes in Láhko National Park.

There are also several hiking routes on Støtt: Svenningen rundt, Helløya rundt, Helløya-Innerstøtt rundt, and Støttværet rundt vary in difficulty. This gives you other named hiking options in the wider Meløy destination, in addition to the route up Åmnesfjellet, without implying that the routes are the same.

Rock art, a farm shop, and seasonal offerings

On Åmøy in the municipality of Meløy, the rock carvings are spread across twelve fields and include at least 23 figures. The rock art site can be reached from the road by following signposts, arrows, and an increasingly well-developed path. The rock art site at Fykan dates to the older Stone Age and is estimated to be 8,000 to 9,500 years old. The two locations offer different points of interest for travellers interested in rock art.

Åmnes Gård is a family-run business on Åmøy in the municipality of Meløy. The farm shop sells locally produced cheese and honey, as well as homemade jam, juice, and bread. Check before driving there whether the farm shop is open to visitors. In Kilvika, the old barn at Myrvoll Kulturgård has been converted into a café, library, and gallery. On selected opening days during the summer season, traditional dishes made with local ingredients are served there, including sour cream porridge, flatbread, dried meat, and meat soup. Opening days are seasonal and limited.

For a trip outside the hiking season, Meløy also has winter activities: Glomfjord Alpinsenter has a chairlift and varied ski runs with views of the fjord and glaciers. Operations and snow conditions are seasonal. When choosing your destination and hotel, you can decide whether the hike at Åmnesfjellet or other destinations in Meløy will be the focus of your trip.
