Beiarn stretches across inland Northern Norway between Beiarfjorden and Svartisen in Nordland. The river, fjord and mountain landscape shape the character of the area. Láhko National Park offers a distinctive natural setting. It lies within the municipalities of Meløy, Gildeskål and Beiarn, on Glomfjordfjellet and parts of Sundsfjordfjellet.

Karst Landscape and Outdoor Experiences in Láhko

Visitors can experience nature in Láhko National Park through simple, low-impact recreational activities, with little technical infrastructure. The landscape is shaped by karst, including caves, karst fissures and corridors, as well as natural bridges and blind valleys. This combination makes the park a distinctive focus for anyone looking to spend time outdoors in Beiarn. The natural features described and the low-key nature of the recreational activities offer two different points to consider when planning: the landscape you want to see and how you want to experience it.

Fishing, Paddling and Rowing on the Water

Salmon fishing in the Beiarelva has drawn many anglers to Beiarn. Shore fishing is possible year-round at Beiarfjorden, where boats can also be rented. The two bodies of water offer different options: the Beiarelva is suitable for canoeing and river kayaking, particularly along its lower stretches. At Beiarfjorden, rowing and paddling are options in good weather and calm conditions. Choosing between river and fjord lets you take into account both the activity and the conditions specified for it.

Tour Destinations on Foot, by Bike or on Skis

Beiartrimmen has been held annually since 2020, and participation is free for everyone. Its digital tour destinations can be reached on skis, snowshoes, on foot or by bike. The event therefore includes different ways of getting around, without requiring every destination to be approached in the same way. For ski tours, groomed cross-country ski trails are available at Beiarfjellet. The sports club Stormfjell and Beiarn Municipality groom them from around March until the end of the season. The approximate start of the season is a useful reference when considering activities for a particular travel period.

Getting Your Bearings and Cultural Sites

Storjord sentrum is designated as the gateway to the national park municipality of Beiarn. It has a tourist information office, a hotel, food and drink options, a shop, and a fuel and charging station. For those looking for a hotel location, Storjord offers a specific point of reference within Beiarn.

Beiarn bygdetun is located on a vicarage dating from 1857 and comprises 12 farm buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. The exhibition “Det var en gang...” (“Once upon a time...”) conveys living traditions and traditional knowledge through music, storytelling and traditional crafts. Guided tours of the exhibition are available year-round on request via a booking form. If you plan to take a guided tour, note that it must be requested in advance.

The Beiarn stave church stands in Savjord and is described as Norway’s northernmost stave church. Together with the bygdetun, it reveals two different aspects of Beiarn’s cultural heritage: the stave church as a named building, and the open-air museum with its farm buildings, traditions and crafts.
