Alstahaug offers different perspectives on history and landscape. At the Petter Dass Museum, modern museum architecture stands alongside the medieval heritage of Alstahaug Church; on Tjøtta, the collection and memorial site recall different chapters of the past. Outdoors, options range from a leisurely walk to marked summit trails. This lets you shape your stay around the things that interest you most.

Museum architecture and medieval heritage

The Petter Dass Museum is Nordland County’s Millennium Site. Its main building was designed by Snøhetta AS between 2001 and 2007. At the museum, Margrethes Kafé serves dishes made with fresh, locally produced ingredients; the menu may change with the seasons.

Alstahaug Church is another architectural and historical landmark. It is a Romanesque medieval church, whose oldest section was built around 1200. A two-kilometre path runs through the surrounding landscape, directly beside the church. It is suitable for a leisurely walk or a family outing, combining a visit to the church site with time outdoors.

Tjøtta: collection and remembrance

Tjøtta Bygdesamling comprises around 1,200 registered objects. Guided tours are available by prior arrangement; there are no regular opening hours. Plan your visit as an arranged appointment rather than a spontaneous stop during an excursion.

The International War Cemetery at Tjøtta is both a burial ground and a memorial to the more than 2,500 prisoners of war and soldiers who died when the MS Rigel sank on 27 November 1944. Visitors can use a rest area with toilets and benches. As facilities may change, it is advisable to check their status before your visit.

At Åsen, a cannon is accessible as part of the visible war memorials along the hiking trail. It offers another point of interest for visitors interested in the area’s memorial sites.

Sandnes and Viking history

The reconstructed chieftain’s farm at Sandnes lies outside the town of Sandnessjøen. Visitors can experience Viking life there, and a guided tour offers insights into the Viking history of Helgeland. As booking options may change, check the current arrangements in advance.

The visitor site includes a reconstructed longhouse at the chieftain’s seat. It is 65 metres long and 7 to 10 metres wide. These dimensions give a concrete sense of the size of the reconstructed building and complement the historical insights offered by a guided tour.

From walking paths to summit hikes

De syv søstre is a mountain range with seven distinctive peaks just outside Sandnessjøen. Marked trails lead to each of the seven peaks. Hiking one or two of them is manageable for experienced hikers in good physical condition; weather and trail conditions can vary. By comparison, the two-kilometre path at Alstahaug Church is intended for a leisurely walk or family outing. The options therefore differ considerably in physical difficulty.

The recreation area by the Sandneselva in Sandnessjøen has walking paths and a nature meeting place with a shelter and benches. It is suitable for a walk that includes a stop in a sheltered spot. For Storvatnet on Tjøtta, a municipal plan for 2019–2023 described an easily accessible and attractive hiking destination with a fire pit and barbecue shelter. If you plan to use these facilities, check in advance whether they are still there.

Swimming, cycling and getting around

The swimming area at Botn Havsbad is partly sheltered, so the water is noticeably warmer than in the open sea. The soft sandy beach is suitable for all ages. From there, scenic walking paths follow the river to several spots along its banks. Water and beach conditions may change.

Sandnessjøen is also easy to explore by bicycle. For navigating by road, Kystriksveien, County Road 17, is an important point of reference: it runs through Alstahaug. Check current traffic and travel information when planning your route.

Plan your stay around your interests

When looking for a hotel in Alstahaug, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on during your trip. Museums, memorial sites, the reconstructed chieftain’s farm, beach walks and summit hikes all offer different reasons to stay.
