Accommodation in Tjøtta
If you’re looking for a hotel for a trip to Tjøtta, the area’s attractions can help you choose a destination: Highlights include church and farm history, a memorial site, as well as trails and birdwatching. This can help you decide in advance whether historic sites or outdoor nature experiences are important for your stay. Specific conditions apply to visits to the collection and to travel arrangements.
Church, Farm History and Cultural Trail
Tjøtta Church was completed in 1851. It was built from natural stone to designs by the architect Christian Heinrich Grosch (1801–1865). Its location at the edge of the Tjøtta Farm grounds connects the church with a large medieval estate. About a thousand years ago, Tjøtta gård was the seat of chieftain Hårek of Tjøtta.
A distinctive feature of Tjøtta gård is the Leikenga ring tun. Several small house foundations are arranged around an open space; today, the ramparts are visible in the landscape as low mounds. The cultural trail at Tjøtta gård passes through a landscape where history and nature are intertwined, and presents cultural heritage from the Stone Age to the modern era. To arrange a guided historical tour, you can contact Tjøtta Historielag.
Collection and Memorial Site
Tjøtta Bygdesamling has about 1,200 registered objects. Tours are available by prior arrangement; there are no regular opening hours. Be sure to arrange your visit with the collection in advance.
Tjøtta Memorial Site has a seven-metre-high memorial stone at a mass grave for Soviet soldiers who died in Northern Norway during the Second World War, from 1941 to 1945, and are buried there. The site adds a specific wartime connection to the history of the farm and church.
Themed Trails and Nature
If you’d like to spend time outdoors, there are several themed trails in the Tjøtta area. There is also a birdwatching hide. At Storvatnet on Tjøtta, there is a fire pit and a barbecue shelter; the lake is considered an easily accessible destination for an outing. These facilities offer different kinds of experiences: the trails and birdwatching draw attention to the landscape and nature, while the fire pit and barbecue shelter provide an opportunity to take a break outdoors.
Ferries, Bus and Routes to the Farm
Several connections are relevant when planning your journey. Ferries run from Tjøtta to Vega and to Forvika on the coastal road towards Brønnøy. Typically, you take the ferry from Forvik to Tjøtta quay; from there, the walk along the local road to Tjøtta gård usually takes eight to twelve minutes.
The nearest bus stop to Tjøtta gård is Tjøtta sentrum. From there, the walk usually takes about five minutes. The two walking times refer to different arrival points at the farm: the bus stop and the ferry quay. Check current bus and ferry timetables before travelling.
When searching for a hotel, you can first decide whether the church, farm history and memorial site or, instead, the trails and nature observation should shape your stay. The information about the bus stop, quay and walking routes can then help you plan your journey to Tjøtta.
