When looking for a hotel for your trip to Moldjord, you can plan around local history and activities by the river. The museum, church and historic trading-post environment offer different chapters of cultural history; Elvestien combines an easy walk with the opportunity to fish.

Cultural history in Moldjord

The Beiarn Folk Museum is housed in a vicarage dating from 1857 and includes twelve farm buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. Its collection adds another perspective on the past: it consists of 166 objects collected by Gustav Moldjord from the age of 18 onwards. It conveys the cultural history of Beiarn as well as the story of a young preserver of the past. The museum also has a 1930 A-Ford vintage car known as the Rønnåbakk Ford.

A tour of the exhibition “Once upon a time...” explores the history of the vicarage and endangered living cultural heritage. If you plan to take this tour, check the current schedule in advance. This allows you to consider the collection, the buildings and the exhibition theme as different ways of exploring Beiarn’s history.

The Beiarn Church in Moldjord adds another historical dimension: this wooden long church was built in 1872–1873. Some of the old furnishings from the demolished chapel were later incorporated into the new church. Moldjord’s historic trading-post environment reflects continuity in economic development and building traditions from the 19th century to the present day. Moldjordfjæra and the river as a transport route are essential parts of this environment. The church and the trading post therefore represent different aspects of local history.

Walking and fishing by the Beiar River

Elvestien is an easy walking trail along the Beiar River. The shorter Kjærlighetsstien loop also branches off from Elvestien and can be used with an electric wheelchair and a pushchair. These route details make it easier to plan a specific loop for your stay rather than a longer walk. You can fish for salmon and sea trout along Elvestien. If fishing is part of your plans, it is advisable to check the current local conditions in advance.

The wider destination of Beiarn lies in the inland region of Northern Norway between the Beiarfjord and Svartisen in Nordland. The fishing opportunities there are also useful reference points for planning the rest of your trip: Beiarelva has drawn many anglers to Beiarn. Shore fishing is possible all year round at the Beiarfjord, where boats can also be rented. This information describes Beiarn as a wider destination and should be distinguished from the routes and activities in Moldjord. This can help you decide whether to focus your stay on Moldjord’s cultural sites and Elvestien, or to explore other aspects of Beiarn as well.
