Brønnøy: Torghatten, nature and culture
Accommodation in Brønnøy
Explore Torghatten on foot, by bike or by boat
On the island of Torget in Brønnøy, Torghatten rises 258 metres above sea level. This hat-shaped mountain has a hole running right through it and is described as the municipality’s main attraction. The route through the mountain is designated a National Tourist Hike and is well developed for hikers of all ages. Check local conditions before your visit.
You can also include Torghatten in your plans by bike or boat. The cycling tour starts in the centre of Brønnøysund and crosses Brønnøybrua; the Torghatten RIB excursion departs from Kongebrygga quay and lasts about an hour and a half. The duration makes it easier to plan the boat trip as a separate activity.
Hikes in Lomsdal-Visten National Park
Lomsdal-Visten National Park is characterised by diverse and abundant flora and fauna along the coast and seashore, as well as in cultural landscapes, forests and mountains. The hiking experience differs from the well-developed route through Torghatten: the national park has long, often challenging trails through varied landscapes, and few facilities to support hikers. Check local access conditions and current trail markings before setting out.
Nevernes is Brønnøy municipality’s gateway to the national park. Together with the municipality, Nevernes Havn has created an information exhibition about Lomsdal-Visten National Park, featuring around 40 exhibits. A hiking trail from Nævernes Gaard leads to a viewpoint overlooking the area towards the national park. Check local access conditions before visiting this trail.
Churches and cultural history
Brønnøy Church is medieval and protected as a historic monument. It reopened in 2008 after restoration. Tilrem also has a medieval church and a historic marketplace.
Velfjord Rural Museum presents the farming, fishing and South Sámi cultures of Brønnøy and Velfjord. Minnetun is also home to a South Sámi kåte, also known as a derhvie-gåetie. The museum also illustrates life on a farm in the 18th and 19th centuries. This offers a cultural perspective that encompasses both regional ways of life and a concrete picture of everyday farm life in earlier centuries.
A garden tour in Brønnøysund
In the coastal surroundings of Brønnøysund, Hildurs Urterarium offers a self-guided garden tour. The themed areas include a biblical garden, poisonous plants, and useful, culinary and medicinal herbs. Each area has a distinct focus: from a religiously inspired garden and plants with special properties to herbs grouped by their uses and benefits. The tour adds a botanical perspective to Brønnøy’s nature and culture.
Getting there and planning your trip
Brønnøysund harbour offers connections to regional and long-distance destinations by bus, train, plane and the Coastal Express. The Hurtigruta calls at Midthavna harbour in Brønnøysund. Check timetables before travelling to make sure your travel arrangements match your planned dates.
When planning excursions during a hotel stay in Brønnøy, you can take different time commitments and activity levels into account: the RIB excursion to Torghatten lasts about an hour and a half, while hikes in Lomsdal-Visten National Park are often long and challenging. The park also has few facilities to support hikers. These differences can help you organise excursions according to the focus you want for your trip.
