Tosbotnet on Tosenfjord
Accommodation in Tosbotnet
Tosbotn lies in the north of Tosenfjord. The landscape around Bjørnstokkvatnan combines a measurable elevation gain, mountain views and several possible onward routes. When planning your trip to Tosbotnet, it is worth considering the specific type of accommodation and the different trail descriptions separately: they range from a waymarked section to a long day hike.
Accommodation and planning your stay
Tosbotn Camping offers comfortable cabins with one, two or three bedrooms, as well as pitches for motorhomes, caravans and tents. If you are considering one of these types of accommodation, check the current information from the operator before your trip, as the offering may change. The hiking descriptions provide different guidance for the rest of your planning: you can distinguish between a waymarked and cleared trail section, trails that are harder to navigate, and a long day hike.
The climb from Tosbotn to Bjørnstokkvatnan gains 340 metres in elevation. The trail from Tosbotn is waymarked and cleared as far as Nedre Bjørnstokkvatnet; trail conditions can change, so it is advisable to check them locally. This information applies to the trail as far as this lake. For your planning, it is helpful not to confuse this section with the trail description towards Lomsdalen: there, the trail is partly marked with cairns and is difficult to find in places. Check the route-finding information for this route particularly carefully.
Hikes and views at Bjørnstokkvatnan
From Øvre Bjørnstokkvatnet, you can see distant mountains to the south and Breidvasstinden to the north. From Bjørnstokkvatnan, hikers can travel over easily walkable terrain towards Breivatnan and on to Tettingsdalen, Strompdal or Lomsdalen. Lomsdalen is a long day hike from Tosbotn. The time required therefore differs considerably between the climb to the lakes and a trip that continues as far as Lomsdalen; you should take current trail conditions into account when planning.
Large rock overhangs lie north of Øvre Bjørnstokkvatnet, nearby, and were formerly used as dwellings. Together, they provide sleeping space for about 10 to 15 people. Their approximate capacity and former use give the overhangs particular cultural-historical significance in the landscape. A route near Tosbotn also connects natural and working history: the Bjørnstokken–Strompdalen trail leads to an old riding path built as emergency relief work in the 1920s.
Brønnøy as a broader travel destination
The broader destination of Brønnøy offers further natural and cultural attractions. Lomsdal-Visten National Park encompasses a varied and species-rich flora and fauna along the coast and seashore, as well as in cultural landscapes, forests and mountains. Hikes in the national park are long and often challenging; there are few facilities to support hikers. This is a different scale from the descriptions of individual trails near Tosbotn and can help you put the wider destination into context.
Brønnøy kirke is also part of the cultural offerings in the broader destination of Brønnøy: it has medieval status, is protected as a heritage site, and reopened after restoration in 2008. On the island of Torget stands Torghatten, a 258-metre-high, hat-shaped mountain with a hole passing all the way through it. It is described as the municipality’s greatest attraction. These examples add to the picture of Brønnøy, while the trails, views and former dwellings at Tosbotn form the local focus.
