Hommelstø – Hiking Trails and Cultural History
Accommodation in Hommelstø
Hommelstø offers several trails in the Krokstien area, traces of local history and an exhibition on the importance of natural resources. For planning, it is worth checking the specific trail lengths and destinations: the routes also differ in their course and individual trail features.
Hiking Trails with Different Destinations
The Krokstien hiking area in Hommelstø includes several circular trails. Facilities in the area include a barbecue hut, a shelter and rest areas. When choosing a route, you can consider not only its length but also the described trail route and destination.
The Rugåsnesstien is about 700 metres long and leads to the old marble quarry and the stone jetty at Rugåsnesodden. The Svanvatnstien is about 600 metres long: this forest trail has no particularly steep sections and ends at Svanvatnet. The two trails therefore differ not only in length but also in their destinations and the routes described.
The Elgstien, about 900 metres long, connects to the Hamptjønnstien. The Kirkestien is about 700 metres long and leads to Osen on the Sørfjord; the Hamptjønnstien, also about 700 metres long, leads there too. When planning, you can therefore choose between routes of similar length but with different named destinations and connections.
The Brennaflågstien is about 400 metres long. It leads up a short, steep ascent to a bench with some views of Krokvatnet. Its trail profile is therefore clearly different from that of the Svanvatnstien, which is described as having no particularly steep sections. The Krokvasstien is suitable for trips with pushchairs and wheelchairs. Trail conditions and facilities may change; check current information before your trip.
Local History and Culture
The Gamle Samvirkelaget in Hommelstø houses the Brønnøy Museum’s Drivkraft/Juhtiehtidh exhibition. It shows how natural resources have shaped the livelihoods of people in the region. This highlights the relationship between these resources and life in the area.
The Kirkestien in the Krokstien area follows a historic route that people once took to church. Nearby, Nøstvik kirke is considered the oldest wooden church in Northern Norway. In Hammarlian, there is a hidden cultural heritage site with around 450 steps; it was probably built between 1910 and 1920. The number of steps and the cautious dating give the site a distinctive historical profile.
Engavatnet is another striking natural phenomenon in the area: the small lake lies on a peninsula at the innermost end of Velfjord, about three kilometres north of Hommelstø, and can disappear completely.
