Vestnes between fjords, hiking trails and culture
Accommodation in Vestnes
Rekdalshesten rises 782 metres directly from the fjord, making it a striking landmark in Vestnes. The village of Tomrefjord is also closely connected to the water: it lies on the eastern shore of the nine-kilometre-long Tomrefjord. With fjord scenery, historic trails and outdoor activities, Vestnes can be explored in many different ways, depending on your interests.
Fjord scenery and villages
In Vikebukt/Gjermundnes, a beach and an outdoor recreation area are part of the landscape. Daugstad offers opportunities for activities on the water and in the mountains, as well as hunting and fishing. These places complement the hiking and cultural attractions found in Vestnes and Tresfjord.
A notable part of the history of Vestnes village is the oldest of three bridges across the strait to Flatevågen: a protected wooden bridge dating from 1844.
Hiking trails and outdoor activities
Vestnes has Stikk-UT! hiking destinations. An overview updated in 2025 lists 19; the number may change from one season to the next. Stikk UT! also includes a historic walk along the Postvegen through the centre of Vestnes and by Remmemsvatnet. This named offering is seasonal, so it is worth checking the latest information before planning your visit.
The Trondhjemske postvei runs from Amdam over Ørskogfjellet and down to the centre of Vestnes. On the Vestnes side, it passes through forest and cultural landscapes, under the E39 and through modern residential areas. Those interested in historic trails will find a route whose course takes in both the landscape and present-day infrastructure.
In the Kråkvika hiking area, a trail leads there from the Vestnes motorhome and rest area. In summer, canoes, SUP boards and life jackets are available to borrow free of charge; the offer is open to everyone. You can get the key during library opening hours, and the equipment is available in the boathouse. Rowing boats can also be borrowed free of charge in the outdoor recreation area; contact Vestnes Frivilligsentral to arrange this.
More ways to get active in Vestnes municipality include ski trails and horseback riding. Many varied ski trails are suitable for recreation and longer training trips; many are also suitable for children and families. Snow conditions and trail grooming vary by season. Horseback riding is available in beautiful natural surroundings. The swimming pool at Tomrefjord Idrettsbygg offers public swimming and training for adults; check the latest opening times before visiting.
Museums and cultural history
Tresfjord Museum officially opened in 1949. It has a pavilion with panoramic views of Tresfjord. The museum also includes an open-air farmstead dating from the mid-19th century. The buildings include a smokehouse, a barn, a storehouse, a mill house, a firehouse and a sleeping house. Check the latest access information before visiting.
Gjermundnes Agricultural Museum is one of three museums in Vestnes municipality. Another link to maritime history is the Båtbyggarmuseet in Vestnes, which led the restoration of the Søblomsten. After its restoration, the ship is intended to continue sailing from its home port as a living cultural monument.
Tresfjord also has a cultural attraction: Gapskattfestivalen is a revue festival.
In Vestnes, fjord scenery, hiking, water activities and history come together. When planning your trip, you can choose what to focus on based on the season and your interests—for example, trails and museums, activities around Kråkvika or winter ski trails.
