As a broader travel destination, Vestnes offers its own cultural and landscape context for planning a trip. Boatbuilding history, museum collections, historic routes and seasonal recreational activities each offer a different focus.

Boatbuilding history in Vestnes

Boatbuilding in Vestnes has been documented for as long as the available records go back. There are boatbuilding museums both at Vestnes Brygge in the municipal centre and in Tresfjord. The Båtbyggarmuseet was founded in 1991 to highlight the importance of boatbuilding to Vestnes’s development.

One specific example of this maritime history is the galeas Søblomsten. Master shipbuilder Lars Hammeraas built the vessel in Vestnes, Møre og Romsdal, in 1864. It was originally a cargo ship, transporting mainly fish and timber. Today, Søblomsten is part of Norway’s protected fleet and belongs to the Båtbyggarmuseet in Vestnes. It is planned to operate it from Helland as a sailing museum ship in the future.

Museums and historic buildings

The Tresfjord Museum officially opened in 1949. Its village complex from the mid-19th century includes a smokehouse, a barn, a granary, a mill house, a fire house and a sleeping house, among other buildings. The museum also includes a general store and a tailor’s workshop from Skorgen, as well as a pavilion with panoramic views over Tresfjord.

Café Lauparen is also part of the Tresfjord Museum and dates from the early 1950s. It is open during events. If the café is important to your plans, check the event dates. The settlement of Vestnes is also home to the oldest of three bridges across the strait to Flatevågen: a protected wooden bridge dating from 1844.
