Accommodation in Fiksdal
Fiksdal offers several points of interest for planning your trip: historical traces around Fiksdal Church, a family trail featuring troll figures, and the mountain destination Melen (Fiksdalshornet) in the nearby area. These themes differ not only in their appeal but also in their location: the church and Troll Trails are in the village, while Melen is in the nearby area. If you are looking for a hotel in Fiksdal, you can take these differences into account when choosing your destination and consider whether local history, a family trail or the views from the summit matter most to you during your stay.
Fiksdal Church and its history
Fiksdal Church is a long church dating from 1866. Its pulpit and altarpiece come from the former Reknes hospital. This brings together two specific historical points of reference: the year the church building was built and the origins of its furnishings. The church’s design and furnishings each place it in the local history in their own way.
The cemetery at Fiksdal Church also dates from 1866. Almost all the grave monuments have been preserved and display changing styles of design. Thus, alongside the dating of the site, the development of grave monument design offers another perspective—a distinct way of exploring local and memorial history.
A memorial stone at Fiksdal Church commemorates 15 soldiers who took part in the Napoleonic Wars from 1807 to 1814. Alongside the church building and the grave monuments, this provides a distinct focus for remembrance: a specifically identified group and a clearly defined period of conflict.
A church stable built around 1914 for churchgoers from Gjelsten was moved to its present location near Fiksdal Church. Another stable served churchgoers from Rekdal; both stables were in use until around 1950. The named groups from Gjelsten and Rekdal distinguish the functions of the two stables and add another historical aspect to the story of the church and cemetery.
Troll Trails as a family outing
Troll Trails is a family outing where small children can look for small and large troll figures along the path. The starting point is at a cattle grid in the village, next to a small car park. At first, the route follows a paved road for about 400 metres; then it turns right onto a forest path marked Trollrunda. This sequence describes how to start the outing and gives you an idea of the route. As access and parking may change, check the situation before your visit; also follow the trail markers on site.
Melen in the nearby area
The summit of Melen, also known as Fiksdalshornet, offers magnificent views. The north and east sides of the summit are very steep. If children are part of your hiking group, pay particular attention to them and assess the terrain and conditions on site. When planning your trip, consider the terrain as well as the viewpoint.
