Rauma: Mountain Views, Culture and Trails
Accommodation in Rauma
Rauma can be explored from several perspectives: the Geiranger–Trollstigen National Tourist Route, also known as Fylkesveg 63, is 104 kilometres long, starts at Sogge bru in Romsdalen and runs through Rauma. Viewpoints, steep rock faces, mountain trails and museums offer different highlights. You can tailor your plans to the landscape, architectural history or guided activities.
Mountain Views and Trails
At Trollstigen, walkways and stairs lead to several viewpoints, including a platform 200 metres above Trollstigvegen. The paths provide access to different vantage points along this striking stretch of road. Trollveggen reveals another dimension of the landscape: it is a 1,000-metre-high, vertical and overhanging rock face.
Rampestreken is a viewpoint 537 metres above Romsdalsfjord, reached from Ă…ndalsnes via Romsdalstrappa. The trail crosses natural terrain and stone steps built by Sherpas from Nepal. At a steady pace, the ascent takes about an hour and a half. From the Romsdalseggen ridge, you can see Trollveggen, Reinheimen National Park, Romsdalen and the Rauma River.
Reinheimen National Park has marked hiking trails in Rauma. At the same time, the park’s purpose is to preserve a continuous mountain area as a habitat for wild reindeer. Both hiking trails and the protection of this habitat are therefore defining features of the area.
Gondola, Climbing Tours and Excursions
The Romsdalsgondolen takes visitors from the fjord to the summit of Nesaksla in seven minutes. Eggen Restaurant is located there at an altitude of 708 metres and serves dishes made with high-quality ingredients from the surrounding region. When planning your time, you can choose between different activities: a seven-minute gondola ride to Nesaksla or an approximately hour-and-a-half climb to Rampestreken at a steady pace.
Via Ferrata Åndalsnes has three climbing routes: Introveggen, Randersveggen and Vestveggen. Guided climbing tours are available; booking and operation are subject to conditions. Check the provider’s latest information before planning a tour. The Golden Train offers a round-trip excursion between Åndalsnes and Bjorli. As services may change, it is worth checking the current connection before making plans.
There are also various activities on the water: guided SUP tours are available on the Istra River, while Romsdal RIB Safari offers trips on Romsdalsfjord. A river walk along the Rauma combines cultural history with experiences in nature. These activities are subject to seasonal and operational conditions; check the latest dates before making plans.
Wine tastings at Tuen vineyard in Setnestuen, Veblungsnes, can also feature in your travel plans. Check the current tasting options in advance.
Stave Church, Mountaineering History and Museums
Rødven stave church, a stave church of the Møre type, stands by Romsdalsfjord. Its diagonal external support posts are called “skordene”. The church has a unique surviving south portal, which probably dates from the first half of the 12th century. Its architectural form, supporting structure and portal offer different points of interest for those interested in architectural history.
The Norsk Tindesenter in Åndalsnes houses the Norsk Tindemuseum, with an exhibition on the development of Norwegian mountaineering history. The centre is an authorised visitor centre for Reinheimen National Park; it received this authorisation in June 2023. It provides information about the park and sustainable trips in the area in summer and winter. At Trollveggen Besøkssenter, a film tells the story of climbing and base jumping at Trollveggen.
The Konfeksjonsmuseet in Isfjorden presents the history of the clothing industry in Romsdal and places it in the context of the history of Norway’s clothing industry. As visitor arrangements may vary, check them in advance. Ner-Hole Museum is an open-air or village museum dating from 1951. It includes a protected stone building and a barn.
