Mittet: Hiking and cultural history
Accommodation in Mittet
When planning a trip to Mittet, there are two perspectives to consider: hiking trails and local cultural history. If you are looking for a hotel in Mittet, you can plan your stay around whether you mainly want to spend time outdoors or explore historical sites.
Hiking around Mittet
Elvaløypa is a circular route that links the village road from Mittet to Dale with trails and old paths along the river. Some sections follow unmarked trails; streams also have to be crossed and livestock gates passed through. These route details are useful when assessing the trail and preparing your hike.
According to the route description, Elvaløypa is suitable for anglers, horse riders, walkers, and recreational athletes. There are several deep river pools along the route that may be suitable for fishing and swimming. Mittet also has a river suitable for fishing. The river pools and the river in the village are separate points of reference: the pools are along the circular route, while the river suitable for fishing is mentioned in connection with Mittet itself.
The mountain road takes you from Mittet to Skrukken, an attractive hiking area. The Elvaløypa circular route and the hiking area near Skrukken therefore offer different ways to explore the surroundings on foot.
Måsvassbu and Mørkvatnet
Måsvassbu, a self-catering cabin with sleeping space for 34 people, is located near Mittet. The cabin is also a starting point for several other hikes. The trail to Måsvassbu is considered easy and well marked. It crosses boggy terrain with boardwalks and follows a DNT trail.
The route details offer a specific comparison: the description of the trail to the cabin emphasizes boggy terrain and boardwalks, while unmarked sections, streams, and livestock gates are key points of reference on Elvaløypa. This allows you to consider the two routes based on their respective features without treating them as the same route.
The hike to Mørkvatnet continues beyond Måsvassbu over gently rising terrain; the lake lies below Klauva. The route from Mittet to Mørkvatnet follows a five-kilometre toll road to Skrokkensetra. If you plan to use this road, check the current toll conditions before setting off.
Cultural history in Indre and Ytre Mittet
Gamleskulen, a well-preserved first-generation school building, stands in Indre Mittet. Also located there is Bautasteinen, a memorial stone from the 1808–1814 war. Dampskipskaia in Indre Mittet is a steamship landing from the late 19th century. Together, the three sites offer insights into different aspects of local history: education, war remembrance, and transport.
There is also a memorial stone by the road, dating from 1914. In Ytre Mittet, Ytremittetsetra points to a seter setting with traces dating back to the 3rd century. Gamle setervegen has been preserved as an old seter road and remains a road or trail. These historical sites complement the hiking options with points of historical interest in different parts of Mittet.
