Sula: Trails, Steamship and Waterside Leisure

Sula offers a range of activities for different interests: maritime history, model railways, trails through the landscape and waterside leisure. Activities range from a trail that can be walked year-round to groomed winter ski trails. This allows you to tailor your mix of culture, exercise and leisure to your interests.

Shipping and technology

The D/S Thorolf was built in 1910–1911 and is Scandinavia’s oldest surviving wooden steamship. Its home port is in Langevåg, near the Devoldfabrikken. Devoldbanen offers a different technical attraction: it is considered Norway’s largest model railway and is open every Saturday from 12:00 to 16:00. Check the opening hours before your trip, as they may change. Maritime history and model railways thus offer two distinct themes.

Trails, seasons and cultural landscape

The trail to Vardane, the highest point on the island of Sula, can be walked year-round. The circular walk at Kjellingset is relatively short and easy, following a well-maintained trail and a gravel road. At Mausavatnet, one side has a paved path for pedestrians and cyclists, while the other has a gravel path. The surfaces and intended uses therefore differ. In winter, groomed ski trails lead to the mountain cabins Taustua and Rollonhytta; one of the trails runs to Taustua.

Kjellingset combines a walk through the landscape with a historical connection: the area is part of a larger cultural landscape with traces of settlement dating from the Migration Period to around 1780. The circular walk and the long history of settlement thus bring together two distinct aspects of a visit to this place.

Waterside leisure and the activity park

The recreational area at Vassetvatnet has swimming spots, shelters, a jungle playground, disc golf, a Tufte Park and picnic areas. At Vassetvatnet, you can choose from swimming, play, exercise and picnic facilities. Bakkevika has a small sandy beach, a toilet, tables and barbecue facilities. The two places offer different things: a variety of leisure activities at one, and a beach, tables and barbecuing at the other.

At Kraftverket Aktivitetspark, children, teenagers and adults can enjoy obstacle courses, slides, a bouldering wall and climbing frames across more than 800 m². The activities range from climbing and balancing to sliding, adding more options to those available outdoors.

Beer tasting and connections to Ålesund

Kaab Bryggeri offers beer tastings that companies, groups of friends and bachelor or bachelorette parties can book. As tasting packages may change, it’s best to ask about current options in advance.

A passenger boat connects Langevåg with Ålesund in about seven minutes. This is an approximate journey time; check current departures separately. You can include this connection in your travel plans without treating the approximate duration as a specific timetable.
