Sula is an island south of Ålesund. If you are looking for a hotel in Sula, nature and cultural history can provide different focal points for your trip: Vardane is the island’s highest point, while Kjellingset and Kalvestad are associated with settlement remains and an abandoned farm. More trails and leisure activities can be found in the wider Sula destination.

Island Trails and Cultural History

The trail to Vardane, the highest point on the island of Sula, is accessible year-round. Another highlight is the Kjellingset-Flesje-Kalvestad cultural heritage trail: Kalvestad is an abandoned farm and a stop along this route. The Kalvestad trail is signposted and starts at the outer end of Sula. This puts a route to the highest point alongside a route with cultural heritage stops as distinct themes.

Kjellingset has settlement remains dating from the Migration Period to around 1780. This long time span gives the site a distinct historical connection within the cultural landscape. If you are particularly interested in the history of settlement, you can focus on Kjellingset; Kalvestad adds the story of an abandoned farm.

The passenger boat is also relevant for getting between Langevåg and Ålesund: the journey takes about seven minutes. Check the travel time before setting out.

More to Explore in the Wider Sula Destination

Trails and recreation areas also shape the wider Sula destination. The circular walk near Kjellingset is relatively short and easy, following a well-maintained path and a gravel track. At Mausavatnet, there is a paved walking and cycling path on one side and a gravel track on the other. These different surfaces offer practical guidance when choosing routes based on the terrain.

The recreation area at Vassetvatnet has swimming spots, shelters, a jungle-themed playground, disc golf, a Tufte Park, and picnic areas. Bakkevika has a small sandy beach, a toilet, tables, and barbecue facilities. The two areas offer different experiences: Vassetvatnet has everything from swimming spots to activities and picnic areas, while Bakkevika combines its small beach with the facilities listed above.

In winter, groomed ski trails lead to the mountain cabins Taustua and Rollonhytta; one of the trails leads to Taustua. This seasonal option differs from the trails described at Mausavatnet and the year-round route to Vardane.

Culture and Activities in Sula

Cultural history also includes the D/S Thorolf: built in 1910–1911, it is Scandinavia’s oldest surviving wooden steamship. Its home port is in Langevåg, by the Devoldfabrikken. The Devoldbanen is considered Norway’s largest model railway and is open every Saturday from 12:00 to 16:00. As opening hours may change, check them before your trip.

At Kraftverket Aktivitetspark, children, teenagers, and adults can enjoy obstacle courses, slides, a bouldering wall, and climbing frames across more than 800 m². Kaab Bryggeri offers beer tastings for companies, groups of friends, and bachelor and bachelorette parties; tasting packages may change.

These different interests can help you choose a hotel: Vardane and the trails offer a focus on landscapes, Kjellingset and the D/S Thorolf on cultural history, while recreation areas and activities provide other possible highlights. This lets you plan your trip around the subjects that interest you most in Sula.
