Fortress and Remembrance

Vardøhus Fortress, on the island of Vardø in the Barents Sea, is considered the northernmost fortress in the world. Eight ceremonial salutes are fired at the fortress each year, including the Sun Salute on January 21. The recurring salutes and the specifically named January date also give this historic site a regular place in the events calendar.

The Steilneset Memorial in Vardø commemorates 91 people who were convicted of witchcraft in Finnmark in the 17th century and burned at the stake. Alongside the fortress, the memorial represents another major historical theme of the destination: while Vardøhus is associated with the annual ceremonial salutes, the memorial draws attention to those persecuted at the time.

The Vardø Museum is Finnmark’s oldest museum and presents the cultural history of the municipality of Vardø. It features exhibitions and 213 stuffed birds from its collection. It also offers guided tours of the exhibitions and other walking tours. Opening hours vary by season.

The museum’s one-hour historical walk covers the history of the fortress, building, immigration and fishing, as well as the Pomor trade and the 17th-century witch trials. Advance booking is required for the tour. Those who prefer to bring these topics together in a single tour will find a range of historical aspects combined in one offering here.

Pomor Trade, Museums and Street Art

The Pomor Museum is devoted entirely to trade between Russia and Norwegian coastal communities during the Pomor period and up to the present day. The Brodtkorbsjåene in the centre of Vardø add another perspective on the Pomors: the buildings are among the region’s oldest surviving fishing sheds and document the Pomors’ activities in Finnmark. The subject is thus reflected both in the history of trade and in preserved storage buildings.

The Vardø Museum’s collection also offers a distinct way to discover the area: alongside the 213 stuffed birds on display, the museum focuses on the cultural history of the municipality of Vardø. Its exhibitions and guided tours present these subjects in a museum setting; remember to take the seasonal opening hours into account when planning your visit.

Another cultural highlight came with the Komafest festival, which also turned Vardø into a gallery of world-class street art. A city walk combines history, art, nature and coastal culture. In Vardø, you can therefore choose between guided historical tours and a broader, themed walk through the city.

Getting Your Bearings Around Vardø and Kiberg

Hornøya is about a ten-minute boat ride from Vardø harbour. On the Varanger National Tourist Route, you can visit Vardøhus Fortress in Vardø after visiting the Steilneset Memorial. These details offer two different points of reference: an approximate boat journey from the harbour and a possible order for visiting the memorial and fortress.

Kiberg also has its own historical connection: the story of its partisans involves a group of 45 soldiers. Seventeen soldiers survived, while at least as many were tortured or killed in battle. This district adds another story to Vardø’s themes, focusing on the people involved and their fate.
