Kjølnes is a mainland lighthouse station on a headland by the Arctic Ocean and a landmark of Berlevåg. Together with the cultural landscapes around Veines, the nature at Kongsfjord and the history of the harbour, it offers different ways to explore the area: coastal structures, early traces of human activity, wildlife and river habitats, and maritime development. This makes it possible to explore Berlevåg according to your own interests, without every experience focusing on the same theme.

Lighthouse and Cultural Traces

Kjølnes Lighthouse is protected under Norway’s Cultural Heritage Act. Its role as a landmark is connected to its location on a headland facing the Arctic Ocean. For travellers interested in lighthouses and coastal history, Kjølnes offers a clear point of reference: the coastal landscape, the lighthouse station and its protected status are all part of the picture.

Veines has a concentration of cultural landscapes from different periods that illustrate the development of Finnmark. A cave near Veines provides evidence of human activity in the Stone Age, around 10,000 years ago. Veinesodden also has two hearth pits from the Sámi Iron Age, dated approximately to the years 0 to 1050 AD. The time periods represented thus range from early traces of human activity to an extended period of the Iron Age. Veines is also home to a king crab museum.

Fjord, Rivers and Nature Trails

The named natural features at Kongsfjord differ according to their location: the islands at the outer end are part of a nature reserve, while a colony of seals can be observed at the inner end. This brings both a protected area and wildlife observation into focus.

The rivers also offer different perspectives. Kongsfjordelva is a national salmon river with productive spawning grounds. Salmon and Arctic char populations have been documented in Storelva. Where the rivers of Berlevåg flow into the Barents Sea, important brackish-water areas form. The water-related features described here thus range from spawning grounds and fish populations to the transition zones between river and sea.

For outdoor activities, Berlevåg Municipality offers several marked nature trails where guided hikes take place. If you are planning a guided hike, check the current schedule in advance. The extensive snowmobile trail network offers a different way to get around: via the Arctic Trail, it connects with neighbouring municipalities and Finland. Nature trails with guided hikes and an intermunicipal snowmobile network thus cater to different travel interests.

Harbour History and Local Life

The Berlevåg Harbour Museum shows how the harbour developed from a boat landing reinforced with stones into a breakwater system with tetrapods. The focus here is on the transformation of the harbour itself. This complements the older cultural traces at Veines with a different theme: maritime development rather than prehistoric and Iron Age remains.

Hurtigruten and Havila coastal cruise ships call at Berlevåg harbour. If you are planning your trip aboard one of these ships, it is worth checking the timetable. Kongsfjord landhandel is also part of the local picture: it is run in a traditional way and complements the broader themes of the coast, nature and history with a connection to everyday life.
