Alta brings together remarkable cultural sites and trails and experiences that vary with the seasons. The Northern Lights Cathedral–Alta Church is in the centre of Alta, at the end of a pedestrian street. It was consecrated on 10 February 2013.

Rock Art and Exhibitions at Hjemmeluft

Hjemmeluft is the largest of Alta’s World Heritage sites. There are more than 3,000 rock carvings on the rock faces on both sides of the bay. A three-kilometre network of trails connects the various sites, opening up an extensive area where rock art can be seen in several places.

The permanent exhibitions at the Alta Museum also explore the region’s distinctive themes: they cover Alta’s rock art, pre-Christian Sámi religion, the Northern Lights and sport fishing in the Alta River. In summer, activities about the Stone Age are added for visitors of all ages. These include archery, stone grinding and making rubbings of rock carvings. These activities are seasonal, so if you want to include them in your plans, check the dates for your travel period.

Hiking and Cross-Country Skiing Through the Seasons

The marked Byløypa stretches across all of Alta: from Tverrelvdalen and Kaiskuru in the east, through Sandfallet and Komsa in the centre, to Skoddevarre and Øytun in the west. In summer, it is used for hiking and cycling; in winter, it is groomed for cross-country skiing. The activities intended for the same route therefore change with the season.

In addition, the municipality of Alta has about 50 kilometres of nearby ski trails along its settlements and in the town. This approximate total length may change as the trails are maintained. According to the municipality of Alta’s notice, updated on 26 May 2026, Komsatoppen is one of the peaks in Alta 10-toppers 2026. From mid-May to the end of July, the midnight sun makes it possible to hike around the clock in Alta; the exact dates of daylight vary by year and location.

Halddetoppen is the highest mountain peak in Alta. The hike leads to the Northern Lights Observatory, where Kristian Birkeland spent the winter of 1899–1900. Here, a striking landscape destination meets a specific chapter in the history of science. As trail conditions vary seasonally, it is worth checking them before setting out.

River Trips, the Canyon and the March Race

Traditional riverboat trips travel through the rapids of the Alta River to Alta Canyon, the largest river canyon in Northern Europe. A trip thus connects the river with a landform that is a defining feature of Alta. If a tour suits your plans, check the provider’s dates in advance.

Another regular event in the annual calendar is the Finnmarksløpet: the dog sled race takes place every year in March in Alta and is considered Europe’s longest dog sled race. The exact race dates and routes may change. Plan your trip around the dates for the year in question.

Experiences Nearby

Sorrisniva is just outside the town of Alta. An ice hotel is built there every winter; its opening date may vary. Sorrisniva offers private and shared minibus transfers for overnight and activity guests. These transfers are therefore restricted to those guest groups.

A packrafting trip on the Alta River is designed for beginners. It includes a minibus transfer from Sorrisniva Wilderness Lodge, a short walk and about an hour and a half of packrafting downstream. Seasonal availability may change; check the tour dates if this experience is important to your trip. This lets you plan river activities and experiences at Sorrisniva while keeping them distinct from the trails and cultural sites in central Alta.
