Discover Vadsø through several distinct themes: polar history, Kven culture and the birdlife of Vadsøya. The places and trails in the municipality also offer different experiences – from cultural attractions in Vadsø to coastal landscapes and hikes.

Polar history and trails on Vadsøya

Vadsøya Cultural Park preserves sources from Vadsø’s earliest history and cultural heritage from different periods. A landmark of polar history in the park is the airship mast. The approximately 1.8-kilometre-long Kulturstien trail runs through flat terrain and is suitable for wheelchairs and prams.

The Kulturløype in Vadsø is a separate trail. It runs through old Vadsø, between Prestelva to the west and Landhuselva to the east, and from Indrebyen via Midtbyen and Vadsøya to Ytrebyen. The two trails therefore cover different routes: the Kulturstien’s length, terrain and accessibility are specified, while the Kulturløype connects several neighbourhoods along its route.

Kven culture, museums and exhibitions

The Vadsø Museum – Ruija Kven Museum is the local museum for the municipality of Vadsø and has national responsibility for the culture and history of the Kvens, also known as Norwegian Finns, a national minority. The permanent exhibition “Kohtaaminen Jäämeren kans – Møtet med Ishavet” explores Kven and Norwegian Finn culture.

At Tuomainen Farm, visitors can see the dwelling house, barn, stable, smithy, bakery and sauna. In Indrebyen, Bietilægården and its quayside landing illustrate the architecture and culture of the Kvens and Norwegian Finns. The “Airships and Boats” exhibition at the Hurtigruten quay features local fishing boats and tells the story of Amundsen and Nobile’s airship expeditions to the North Pole in the 1920s. The Varanger Festival is also held in Vadsø every year.

Birdlife and coastal places

Vadsøya is an important wetland for ducks and waders and has particularly diverse birdlife. Store Ekkerøy is a peninsula with a fishing village in the municipality of Vadsø, 15 kilometres east of the town centre. On its western side are bird cliffs that are part of the Ekkerøya Nature Reserve; there are also sandy beaches.

In summer, visitors to Ekkerøy can see the exhibitions and visit the café at the Kjeldsen fish processing plant, 13 kilometres east of Vadsø. This seasonal offering adds a specific summer destination to the municipality’s varied nature and cultural attractions.

River and hikes

The Vestre Jakobselv River is important for outdoor recreation, including salmon fishing, and is considered a good river for salmon and trout. The Solvarden Øst day-hiking cabin is located at 309 metres above sea level in Vestre Jakobselv, in the municipality of Vadsø. The route there is 3.07 kilometres each way.

A longer summer hike follows the Sjåbuselva River in Vadsø to the waterfall in Nattfjelldalen. The round trip is listed as 18 kilometres and takes around six to seven hours; the route information may vary depending on the endpoint. The distances are measured differently: Solvarden is given as a one-way distance, while Nattfjelldalen is listed as a round-trip distance with an approximate duration.

Vadsø is also one of the larger towns along the Varanger National Tourist Route. When choosing a hotel, you could first consider whether your planned visits will focus mainly on Vadsø or also include destinations elsewhere in the municipality.
