Vadsø: Cultural Trails, Airship History and Music
Accommodation in Vadsø
If you are looking for a hotel in Vadsø, you can plan your trip around cultural history, music events or a longer summer hike. These different themes give your trip a variety of focuses: from a cultural trail in Vadsøya kulturpark and historic sites to a day of hiking in Nattfjelldalen.
Cultural trails and polar history
The cultural trail in Vadsøya kulturpark is about 1.8 kilometres long, runs across flat terrain and is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. The park also contains remains of the settlement that preceded the town of Vadsø. Here, practical information about the trail's length and terrain meets the history of an early settlement.
A prominent link to polar history is the airship mast in Vadsøya kulturpark. In 1926, it served as a landing site in connection with Roald Amundsen's North Pole expedition aboard the airship “Norge.” In 1928, the airship “Italia,” with Umberto Nobile as captain, also landed there. The two dates link the site to two different episodes in airship journeys to the North Pole.
The cultural trail through old Vadsø runs between Prestelva in the west and Landhuselva in the east. Its route takes you from Indrebyen through Midtbyen and Vadsøya to Ytrebyen. Esbensengården is also part of Vadsø's history: the historic property was built in 1848–1849 and is part of Vadsø museum–Ruija kvenmuseum. It was built well before the airship events of the 1920s. Vadsø Museum – Ruija kvenmuseum is the local museum for the municipality of Vadsø and has national responsibility for the culture and history of the Kven, or Norwegian Finn, national minority. The permanent exhibition “Kohtaaminen Jäämeren kans – Møtet med Ishavet” explores this culture. Bietilægården, with its quayside in Indrebyen, showcases the building style and culture of the Kven and Norwegian Finns. In Vadsø, the “Airships and Boats” exhibition at the Hurtigruten quay features local fishing boats and tells the story of Amundsen's and Nobile's airship journeys to the North Pole in the 1920s.
Plan a festival and a hike
Varangerfestivalen is an annual music festival held in Vadsø, featuring several genres. It takes place in calendar week 32.
The summer hike to the waterfall in Nattfjelldalen starts at the Sjåbuselva River in Vadsø. The round trip is 18 kilometres long, with a walking time of around six to seven hours. The route measurement may vary depending on the endpoint. Nature complements cultural history in the wider Vadsø destination: Vadsøya is an important wetland for ducks and waders, with particularly diverse birdlife. Store Ekkerøy, a peninsula with a fishing village, lies 15 kilometres east of the town centre; on its western side are seabird cliffs in the Ekkerøya Nature Reserve and sandy beaches. In summer, visitors to Ekkerøy can visit the exhibitions and café at the Kjeldsen fishery.
