Tivat between maritime history and nature
Accommodation in Tivat
Tivat brings together several distinct themes for trip planning: maritime heritage, local culture, protected nature, and activities on the water or on land. This lets you set your priorities for your stay and then look for a hotel in Tivat. Tivat has an international airport and is considered easily accessible for tourists. Check current flight connections separately when planning your arrival.
Maritime history and seafaring
The Zbirka pomorskog nasljeđa collection in Porto Montenegro presents maritime traditions and the Adriatic’s nautical past. The submarine museum in Porto Montenegro includes the P-821 Heroj submarine.
The sailing ship Jadran was built in 1933 and is associated with Tivat’s maritime tradition. It can be visited during seasonal Open Day events. Check event dates if you are planning a visit.
The Bokeljska mornarica is also part of the region’s history: it was founded in 809, recognized as Montenegro’s intangible cultural heritage in 2013, and follows traditional ceremonies in Tivat.
Culture and historic sites
The “Etnografsko nasljeđe Tivta” collection is on display at the medieval Buća complex. It covers traditional clothing, crafts, significant local figures, and intangible cultural heritage.
Near Tivat, in Gornja Lastva, is the church Crkva Rođenja Marijinog, mala Gospa. It was built in 1410 and has a Baroque altar by Venetian masters. The nearby island of Gospa od Milosti is home to a Franciscan monastery and a church; pilgrims have visited the island continuously for more than 500 years.
Miholjska Prevlaka, also called Flower Island, is another nearby destination. The monastery on the island was built in the 6th century. Visitors can tour the monastery and spend time at the beach.
Parks and birdlife
Veliki gradski park was established in 1892 on former estates belonging to the Radali and Verona families and has been protected as a natural monument since 2015. The nearby Tivatska Solila nature reserve offers a different focus: it lies along the Adriatic migration corridor and serves as a resting and feeding area for migratory birds. Some species winter there. Solila has been protected as a special nature reserve since 2008.
Trails and views
There are marked cycling paths on the streets of Tivat. Trails on Vrmac and the Luštica peninsula are suitable for hiking, mountain hiking, and mountain biking, with views of the Bay of Kotor and the Adriatic.
Nearby, the “Život na Luštici” panoramic route can be accessed from the Tivat–Budva road. It runs through Bjelila, Krašići, Zabrđe, and Klince, then continues through villages on Luštica towards Luštica Bay.
Water activities and local cuisine
Tivatski zaliv and PrĹľno Bay are mentioned as diving sites. Their described features include clear water, shipwrecks, and Mediterranean marine flora. The Neptun-Mimoza diving club in Tivat offers diving courses as well as rental and maintenance of complete diving equipment.
Tivat Bay is suitable for recreational sea kayaking because of its calm waters and natural scenery. On land, café and restaurant terraces are part of the scene along the Pine promenade. Krempita at Hotel Pine is considered a popular dessert among locals and visitors.
