Churches and Chapels in Donja Lastva

The Chapel of Saint Teresa is in the courtyard of the former Zmajević–Jakonja summer residence. A wall with a round-arched portal and a paved path remain from the former complex. A stone colonnade lines the path to the residential building. Don Đuro Perušina, parish priest of Gornja and Donja Lastva, had the chapel built in 1934. The family chapel of Saint Teresa was severely damaged in the 1979 earthquake.

The Chapel of St. Mihovil is in the local cemetery near the Church of St. Roch. Residents built it in 1901 as a small building without an apse and with a single-tier bell tower. A painting in the chapel depicts the saint with wings, a spear, and military equipment.

The Church of St. Roch stands on the seafront in Donja Lastva. Built in 1901, it stands on the site of an older chapel commissioned by the noble Bolica family in the mid-16th century. The central altar features a 19th-century painting by Mihailo Flori from Prčanj. Also by the sea, in the Bašići area of Donja Lastva, is the Chapel of Our Lady of Carmel.

The Chapel of St. James on the former Dabinović–Makhovec estate has a different story: it is in ruins and overgrown. Together with the chapel in the courtyard of the former summer residence and the churches on the waterfront, it shows the variety of religious buildings preserved in Donja Lastva.

Carnival, Diving, and Padel

The traditional Lastovo Carnival takes place in Donja Lastva on Saturdays in February. The procession goes to the pier in front of the Church of St. Roch. Exact dates and the route may vary from year to year, so check the information for the event in question if you want to plan your trip around it.

The Neptun-Mimoza Diving Club has a base in Donja Lastva. It offers rental and maintenance of complete diving equipment, provides diver training, and also caters to tourists who want to dive in the Adriatic. Check before your trip whether the club is currently operating. Padel Montenegro is in Donja Lastva near Hotel Kamelija; here, too, it’s a good idea to check the latest operating information in advance.

Nature and Maritime History in the Wider Tivat Destination

The wider Tivat destination offers further nature and culture attractions. Tivat City Park has been a protected area since 1968 and was declared a natural monument in 2015. Visitors can stroll in the shade of mature trees, some of them exotic; some trees are up to 130 years old and 25 meters tall.

Solila is a coastal wetland covering about 150 hectares, opposite Tivat city center in Krtole Bay. Since 2013, it has been listed as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention and designated an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area. Solila is also a candidate for Emerald Area status under the Bern Convention.

The Maritime Heritage Collection in Porto Montenegro is also part of the wider Tivat destination. The museum presents Tivat’s maritime traditions and the Adriatic’s nautical past. The submarine museum there includes the submarine P-821 Hero, considered a former flagship of the Yugoslav Navy. This makes it possible to distinguish Donja Lastva’s churches, chapels, and waterfront locations from the nature and museum attractions in the wider Tivat destination.
