Dupilo: Circular Routes to the Opačac Pool
Accommodation in Dupilo
For a stay focused on hiking, Dupilo offers specific route options. The trails differ in their routes and landscape destinations. The wider Bar destination also offers additional hiking and cycling options, as well as activities on Lake Skadar.
Circular Routes and Their Destinations
An easy circular hike runs 4.8 kilometres from the settlement to the Opačac Pool. The return route follows a stream uphill through the valley. The total circuit distance gives you a specific figure to use in your planning. Trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out.
The second route, “Babin most - Dupilo - Babin most”, circles the south-facing side of the valley. A detour across a meadow leads to a naturally formed pool with a waterfall. The two circular routes therefore differ mainly in their destinations: one leads to the Opačac Pool, while the other includes a detour to the waterfall pool. Natural features and trail conditions may vary seasonally.
The Orahovštica Trail
The 7.5-kilometre Orahovštica Trail offers a different route profile. On an organised tour in 2022, the route passed the Donji Brčeli Monastery and the Opačac Bridge before reaching Dupilo’s Šuplja stijena. Along the way, natural and cultural points of interest were linked. Its distance can be compared with the 4.8 kilometres of the circular hike; the Orahovštica Trail is the longer of the two routes with stated distances.
More Options in the Wider Bar Destination
In the wider Bar destination, the Orahovštica Valley north of Crmnica is known for its forests and abundant water. There are several easy trails there, and old monasteries with fresco-decorated churches are nearby. This natural and cultural setting adds further themes to consider when planning a trip, alongside the specific hiking routes in Dupilo. The Old Olive Tree in Mirovica is one of the natural monuments in the municipality of Bar.
Lake Skadar National Park also has nine marked hiking trails that visitors can explore independently with a map. Maps are available at the visitor centres in Virpazar and Vranjina. For cycling, the park offers five cycling routes and two mountain biking trails; some of the cycling routes start in Virpazar.
Licensed operators organise boat trips on Lake Skadar, including from Virpazar. Birdwatching can be arranged from a boat or from the Stanaj observation tower; booking at least one day in advance is required. If you plan these activities, allow for this lead time.
For an overview of the wider destination: the Bar area lies between the Adriatic coast and Lake Skadar. Three major highways cross the municipality, including the Ulcinj–Bar–Budva connection and the Bar–Petrovac–Virpazar–Podgorica route.
