When looking for a hotel in Čanj, you can start by getting your bearings through its coastal location and the area’s different beach features. Čanj lies in a natural bay between the hills of Velji Grad and Kotrobanja. Steep, rocky slopes descend directly to the Adriatic Sea, forming the scenic setting for this destination.

Beaches and swimming conditions

Čanj Beach is about 797 metres long and covered with fine sand and pebbles. Pearl Coast in Čanj is a pebble beach covering an area of 55,000 square metres. The length and area refer to different beach measurements and help give an idea of the scale of the area.

The main beach has a gentle entry into the sea and is considered suitable for families. Biserna obala is also considered a family-friendly beach on the Bar Riviera. Vela Beach & Bar in Čanj is a beach bar serving food and drinks. In July 2022, the Bar Tourism Organisation reported that Vela Beach had been awarded a Blue Flag; check before your trip whether the award is still valid.

Queen’s Beach is in Pećin Bay near Čanj, between Petrovac and Sutomore. The beach is accessible only by sea. It also has a historical connection to the area: Queen’s Beach was a favourite holiday spot of Montenegrin Queen Milena Petrović. Its location, access and history give this nearby beach a distinctive character, setting it apart from descriptions of the beaches in Čanj.

Coastal settlements and history

In the 18th century, Čanj served as an alternative harbour when Kotor and Bar were inaccessible. A stone warehouse is considered the only surviving structure from this harbour period. The town’s history is therefore also linked to the bay’s function as a harbour.

The wreck of an Italian military aircraft also lies near Čanj Beach. The area thus brings together coastal scenery and historical connections, while the description of the beach alone does not capture the full character of the surroundings.

The wider Bar destination

The wider Bar destination stretches between the Adriatic coast and Lake Skadar. Licensed operators organise boat trips on Lake Skadar, with boats departing from places including Virpazar. Lake Skadar National Park has nine marked hiking trails that visitors can explore independently using a map. Maps are available at the visitor centres in Virpazar and Vranjina.

The wider Bar destination also has five cycling routes and two mountain bike trails; some cycling routes start in Virpazar. Birdwatching on Lake Skadar can be arranged from a boat or from the Stanaj observation tower. Registration is required at least one day in advance. These regional options add to the appeal of Bar, while Čanj has its own focus on its bay, beaches and coastal history.
