In Tauragė District, protected landscapes, visitor centres and archaeological heritage offer distinct travel interests. The Viešvilė State Nature Reserve, exhibitions at the Pagramantis and Viešvilė centres, and the Ivangėnai (Karšuva) archaeological complex provide concrete starting points. Nemunas and Jūra are also named as important rivers for tourism in the district.

Viešvilė natural landscape

The Viešvilė State Nature Reserve is included in the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance and in the Natura 2000 ecological network. It protects the natural ecosystem of the Viešvilė river basin, including the Artosios and Gličio wetlands and the surrounding forests of Karšuva-Girija. The river basin, two named wetlands and forest are thus at the heart of a shared landscape. These protection designations give the area a clear ecological focus. If wetlands and forest landscapes are among your travel interests, this protected area is a concrete starting point for planning your itinerary.

Visitor centres and exhibitions

The Pagramantis Regional Park Visitor Centre is located in Ringių, at the confluence of the Akmena and Jūra rivers in Tauragė District. The centre houses the modern, informative exhibition “Almančios rėvos”. The centre thus combines a named exhibition theme with its location by two rivers. The Jūra is important both for tourism in the district and as one of the rivers that meet the Akmena in Ringių.

The Viešvilė State Nature Reserve Visitor Centre is located in Eičių in Tauragė District. Its exhibition presents Karšuva-Girija, the Viešvilė stream that flows through it, and the surrounding wetlands. A 1,000-year-old peat profile is also on display there. The exhibition thus combines landscape themes with a specific exhibit. The centre also offers the opportunity to visit Lithuania’s only capercaillie breeding facility. If you plan to include this visit, check that visits are possible before setting off.

Archaeological heritage and trip planning

The Ivangėnai (Karšuva) archaeological complex on the Suvirkštis River comprises two hill forts, a settlement at their foot and a burial ground. As an archaeological complex, Ivangėnai offers a different focus from the visitor centre exhibitions.

The centres differ in their exhibition themes and in Viešvilė’s additional peat-profile exhibit; the opportunity to visit the capercaillie breeding facility adds another dimension there. If you especially want to include this facility, check whether visits are possible before setting off.

Further cultural context in Lithuania

Lithuania as a wider travel destination has five UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These include the Vilnius Historic Centre, added to the World Heritage List in 1994, and Modernist Kaunas: Architecture of Optimism, 1919–1939, added in 2023. These cultural attractions across the country broaden the perspective beyond nature and cultural heritage in Tauragė District.
