Veliuona’s themes range from a medieval castle to church and museum history, as well as a cycling route. Specific points of interest include Gedimino Kapas, Ramybės Hill, the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Regional History Museum. In the wider region, Panemunių Regional Park preserves the landscape of the lower Nemunas, its natural ecosystem and cultural heritage. If you are looking for hotels for a trip to Veliuona, these highlights can help you choose a theme for your trip: history and cultural heritage offer a different focus from a cycling tour.

The Castle and Its History of Negotiations

Junigeda Castle stood on Gedimino Kapas hillfort and was later called Veliuona Castle. It was built in 1291. Negotiations with the Teutonic Order over Samogitia took place at Veliuona Castle. The site therefore connects a specific construction date with a political context: the negotiations concerned Samogitia and are part of the castle’s history.

A Second Hillfort

Ramybės Hill is another hillfort and an archaeological monument of national significance. It dates from the 13th to the 15th century. The information about the two sites is easy to distinguish: 1291 is the year the castle on Gedimino Kapas was built; the broader date range refers to Ramybės Hill. This places a specific year alongside the dating of a second archaeological monument, without suggesting they describe the same site.

Church and Cultural Heritage

The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Veliuona is one of the oldest churches in Lithuania. The remains of folklorist and priest Antanas Juška and his brother Jonas Juška lie in the churchyard. The church also preserves many movable cultural assets. Here, the long history of the church building, the memory of two brothers known by name and the cultural assets preserved in the church all come into view. This adds a religious and cultural-historical focus to the story of the castle.

Museum, Manor House and Park

The Veliuona Regional History Museum displays Valentino Gerulaitis’ exhibition “LDK Veliuona” about the history of the area. Check before your visit whether the exhibition is currently on display. The museum is housed in the Zaleski manor house, dating from the early 19th century and considered a neoclassical architectural monument. The exhibition and the building offer different points of interest: the exhibition focuses on regional history, while the building’s date and architectural classification draw attention to the manor house.

Another aspect of the landscape is the preserved park next to Veliuona Manor House. Rare yellow-flowering tulip trees grow there. The park adds a specific feature of the garden landscape to the historical themes. In the wider region, Panemunių Regional Park preserves the landscape of the lower Nemunas, its natural ecosystem and cultural heritage. Thus, in addition to historic buildings and cultural sites, nature and landscape can also be a focus of your trip.

Cycling Route and Getting Around

The 31-kilometre Panemunė Cycling Route connects visitor sites on the right bank of the Nemunas and leads to Veliuona, where there are numerous attractions. The route offers a distinct way to plan a trip alongside the individual historical themes. Check local trail conditions before setting out, as they may change. The Kaunas–Šilutė road also passes through Veliuona. The cycling route and the road are two different points of reference: one connects visitor sites along the river, while the other runs through the town.
