Lumpėnai: Local History and Culture in the Surrounding Area
Accommodation in Lumpėnai
Lumpėnai was first mentioned in writing in 1536 and first marked on maps in 1665. The first map depiction followed the written mention 129 years later. The village’s name derives from the Lumpė stream, called the Lompe in German. The Lumpė River flows through Lumpėnai and is part of the Nemunas river basin.
Location and orientation
Lumpėnai is located 9 kilometres east of the town of Pagėgiai on the Jurbarkas–Šilutė highway. The village has a library, a medical station, a forestry administration and a shop. If any of these services are important to your travel plans, check their current availability.
The administrative building of the Lumpėnų seniūnija at Rambyno g. 22 in Lumpėnai is recommended as the starting point for the historical walk. This recommendation comes from a route description published in 2025; confirm on site whether the starting point still suits your plans.
School, press and places of remembrance
The first school in Lumpėnai opened in 1739 and offered primary education. In 1944, lessons in Lithuanian began there; the school remained in operation until 1983. There were 244 years between its opening and the end of its operation, while 1944 marked a distinct turning point in the school’s history.
Enzys Jagomastas (1870–1947) was from Lumpėnai. He was a publisher, editor, press worker and socially engaged public figure. He contributed significantly to the development of the Lithuanian-language press in Lithuania Minor. His origins link the village to a history of the press that reaches beyond Lumpėnai.
At the old, no-longer-used Evangelical Lutheran cemetery in Lumpėnai, symbolic krikštai mark the resting places of those buried there. Many Lietuvininkai who lived from the late 19th to the early 20th century rest there. A memorial erected in the cemetery in 2008 commemorates Enzys Jagomastas’s parents. The two forms of remembrance serve different purposes: the krikštai mark resting places, while the memorial commemorates Jagomastas’s parents.
On 6 March 2020, the local history museum exhibition “Šviesos kampelis” opened next to the library in Lumpėnai.
Culture in the surrounding area
Rambyno kalnas, an important site in Lithuania’s cultural memory, lies south of the village, within the Lumpėnų seniūnija area. The hill is outside Lumpėnai. For a clear sense of location, distinguish this landmark from the visitor centre in Bitėnai.
The visitor centre of Rambynas Regional Park in Bitėnai has an exhibition on the history of the area around Rambynas, crafts, the way of life of the Lietuvininkai, well-known local figures, and the wildlife and plant life of the surrounding forests and meadows. Events and exhibitions are also held at the centre. If you are planning to attend a particular event, check the dates in advance.
The Martynas Jankus Museum of Pagėgiai Municipality is also located in the wider area around Lumpėnai.
