Šilalė District Municipality: Museums, Kūlgrinda and Landscape
Accommodation in Šilalė District Municipality
Šilalė District Municipality brings together a variety of attractions: an educational trail over the Sietuvos kūlgrinda, ethnographic collections in distinctive exhibition venues, places associated with notable individuals, bodies of water and individual leisure activities. You can tailor your choices according to whether you are interested in history and collections, a particular route, or nature and leisure attractions.
An educational trail and a visit by appointment
A 2 km educational trail runs over the Sietuvos kūlgrinda. It is considered the only kūlgrinda in Lithuania that is open to visitors. The trail’s length provides a concrete reference point for planning; at the same time, its distinctive visitor access sets it apart among the region’s attractions.
A different kind of practical planning applies to the Upyna Ethnographic Museum: visits and guided tours must be arranged in advance by appointment. Be sure to arrange your visit ahead of time. The collection is displayed in a former parish barn. Numerous metal crosses, roofed crosses and small chapels are attached to its exterior walls.
Museums with their own history and design
The Upyna Ethnographic Museum preserves around 3,500 ethnographic exhibits from Upyna and the surrounding areas. The collection’s origins give it a distinct regional connection. Together with the former parish barn and the religious objects on its exterior walls, it creates a museum setting where the collection and the building offer different perspectives.
The Dionizas Poška Baubliai Museum was founded in 1812 and is considered the oldest museum in Lithuania. It is housed in the trunks of thousand-year-old oak trees. Compared with the former parish barn in Upyna, the setting itself is a striking feature here: both museums connect their respective histories with a distinctive architectural setting.
In 2024, a shelter was built for Vladas Kensgaila’s 1:2 scale model of the “Lituanica” at the Stasys Girėnas Birthplace Museum. The year refers to the construction of the shelter. Lembas is also the birthplace of Kazimieras Jaunius, a Catholic clergyman and scholar of the Lithuanian language. This biographical site adds a connection to the history of the Lithuanian language to the museum offerings.
Leisure activities and landscape
The Gėliūkis farm has a seven-wind flower maze and offers self-discovery activities. Check whether the program is available before your trip. Paulikai Lavender Idyl offers lavender tea to sample. Here too, it is advisable to check availability before your visit.
The Aukštagirė ski slope is located next to the Aukštagirė observation tower. If you plan to visit the ski slope, check current operating details in advance. Its proximity to the observation tower is a useful point of reference, but does not replace checking whether the slope is operating.
The Jūra River flows through Šilalė District Municipality. Lake Paršežeris is a lake of national importance within the municipality and covers 193.4 hectares. The two bodies of water offer different points of reference for exploring the landscape: one is a river flowing through the area, the other a lake with a specified area and national importance.
If you would like to extend your plans beyond individual sites and explore the wider Šilalė region, the Šilalė Tourism Information Centre or selected professional guides can create sightseeing itineraries tailored to your interests in the region.
